Southern Transitional Council breaks with wartorn state’s internationally recognised government

The Saudi Arabian-backed government in Yemen has warned of a catastrophe if the country’s powerful separatist movement forges ahead with its declaration of self-rule over the key port city of Aden and other southern provinces.

The Southern Transitional Council’s armed forces were deploying on Sunday in Aden, the interim seat of the internationally recognised government backed by the Saudi-led military coalition that had until now included the STC.

Saudi Yemen-Led Coalition Fractures. Separatists Seize Control Of Aden

The Independent: Southern Yemen separatists seize presidential palace, tearing coalition apart and sparking fears of new war

Government official claims ‘it’s all over’ as serious fractures within the Saudi-led coalition threaten fresh conflict

Yemen’s southern separatists have seized control of the port city of Aden after storming the presidential palace, the seat of the internationally-recognised government, ripping apart a Gulf coalition fighting rebels in the north and sparking fears of a new war.

Yemeni officials confirmed that the Southern Transitional Council, which was once part of a Gulf-backed coalition fighting the Houthi rebels, had taken all of the government military camps in the strategic city. A separatist commander later claimed they also seized the presidential palace.

The country’s recognised foreign ministry called the action a “coup” while an official within the government told Reuters “it’s all over”.

UAE-Backed Yemeni Separatists Have Taken Control Of The Southern Port City Of Aden

BBC: Yemen separatists capture most of Aden, residents say

Yemeni separatists have taken almost full control of the southern port city of Aden after days of fighting with government forces, residents say.

PM Ahmed bin Daghar and members of his cabinet are believed to be holed up inside the presidential palace in Aden.

There are reports of talks between the southern separatists and government forces, who were previously allies.

The fighting opens up a new front in Yemen, splitting the alliance against Houthi rebels in the north.

It has already led to the deaths of 40 people since Sunday, the Red Cross says.

The separatists are also reported to have also seized Aden's military bases.

Yemen War News Updates -- August 30, 2015

Reuters: Saudi-led coalition air strike kills 36 Yemeni civilians: residents

An air strike by warplanes from a Saudi-led coalition killed 36 civilians working at a bottling plant in the northern Yemeni province of Hajjah on Sunday, residents said.

In another air raid on the capital Sanaa, residents said four civilians were killed when a bomb hit their house near a military base in the south of the city.

The attacks were the latest in an air campaign launched in March an alliance made up mainly of Gulf Arab states in support of the exiled government in its fight against Houthi forces allied to Iran.

Yemen's Houthi Militia Continue Their Military Offensive

Reuters: Yemen's Houthi militia poised to take president's Aden base

(Reuters) - Houthi militia forces in Yemen backed by allied army units seized a key air base on Wednesday and appeared poised to capture the southern port of Aden from defenders loyal to President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, local residents said.

After taking al-Anad air base, the Houthis and their military allies, supported by heavy armor, advanced to within 40km (25 miles) of Aden, where Hadi has been holed up since fleeing the Houthi-controled capital Sanaa last month.

Unidentified warplanes fired missiles at the Aden neighborhood where Hadi's compound is located, residents said. Anti-aircraft batteries opened fire on the planes.

Worshipers In The Yemen Mosque Were Calling For The Death Of Israel And America When The ISIS Suicide Bomber Attacked

Times Of Israel: Yemen worshipers were cursing Jews when mosque blown up

Shiite congregants in Sana’a called for death of Israel and the US; then an IS suicide bomber killed scores

A video recording of a deadly terrorist attack at a Shiite mosque in Yemen on Friday revealed that worshipers were chanting a slew of hateful slogans just as a suicide bomber detonated himself, killing scores of people.

The bombing, one of three committed in a pair of mosques, was carried out by the Islamic State during weekly prayers. At least 142 people were killed and 351 were wounded in the attacks, carried out in the Shiite rebel-controlled capital city of Sana’a.

Saudi Arabia Warns That They May Intervene In Yemen If Peace Talks Fail

BBC: Saudi Arabia warns of 'necessary measures' over Yemen

Gulf Arab states will take "necessary measures" against Yemen's Houthi rebels if a peaceful solution cannot be found to the country's instability, Saudi Arabia's foreign minister has said.

Saud al-Faisal also condemned Iranian "interference" in Yemen.

The UN has warned that Yemen is on the edge of civil war, as the Shia Houthis attempt to tighten their control.

The group has been pushing further south from its northern stronghold, clashing with local armed elements.

This moves the Houthis closer to conflict with forces loyal to President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi, who is based in the southern port city of Aden.

British Special Forces Join U.S. Special Forces In Evacuating From Yemen

SKY News: British Special Forces Pull Out Of Yemen

British troops are airlifted out of the capital Sana'a as the UN warns rebel advances leave the country on the brink of civil war.

UK Special Forces have pulled out of Yemen because of the deteriorating security situation in the country.

Sky News understands they were airlifted from the capital Sana'a over the weekend.

They had been operating in the country alongside US counterparts, who have now also been withdrawn.

US forces evacuated al Annad airbase near the southern city of al Houta, which was captured by al Qaeda militants on Friday.

Yemen Crisis: News Updates -- March 23, 2015

Reuters: Yemen foes square off as fears of war, Saudi-Iran rivalry grow

(Reuters) - Yemen's top factions are squaring off for battle after months of skirmishes, turning respectively to neighboring Saudi Arabia and its regional rival Iran for help in what may become all-out war.

With President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi seeking a comeback from the port city of Aden while the Shi'ite Houthi movement controls the capital Sanaa, rival administrations are trading bellicose rhetoric as fighting intensifies and factions commandeer airfields for the next stage of the struggle.

Somewhat on the sidelines, al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) and Islamic State are waiting to exploit what some fear could become Yemen's worst conflict since a 1994 civil war.

Houti Rebels Seize Yemen's 3rd Largest City. Country At the Brink Of Civil War

Reuters: Houthis take parts of Yemeni city, Hadi sees 'coup'

(Reuters) - Houthi fighters opposed to Yemen's president seized parts of the country's third largest city of Taiz amid growing concern about a conflict diplomats say risks drawing in neighboring oil giant Saudi Arabia and its main regional rival Iran.

The U.N. Security Council was set to meet to discuss Yemen after President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, a U.S. ally, accused the Iranian-allied Houthi militia of staging a coup against him and appealed to the United Nations for “urgent intervention”.

U.S. officials said Washington had evacuated its remaining personnel from Yemen, including about 100 special operations forces, because of worsening security, marking a setback in U.S. efforts against a powerful al Qaeda branch.

Fighting Escalates In Yemen As Houthis Launch Airstrikes

Washington Post: Fighting escalates in Yemen as Houthis launch airstrikes

BEIRUT — Intense clashes erupted Thursday in southern Yemen between forces loyal to the beleaguered president and the Shiite rebels whose assaults have pushed the Arabian Peninsula country into chaos.

Airstrikes targeted the palace of Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi in the southern port city of Aden, to which he fled last month after escaping captivity by the rebels, known as Houthis. The rebels now control the capital, Sanaa.

The air raids followed a siege earlier in the day at the airport in Aden, where Hadi has set up a rival governing authority. The split raises the specter of an all-out civil war and could drag Yemen into a proxy conflict between the region’s two most powerful countries: Sunni Saudi Arabia and Shiite Iran. Hadi’s authority in the south is backed by Riyadh, while the Houthis, who are followers of the Zaydi sect of Shiite Islam, have received increasing support from Tehran.

Suicide Bombers Kill 137 In Yemen

Bloomberg: Suicide Bombers Attack Shiite Mosques in Yemen Killing Dozens

(Bloomberg) -- Suicide bombers attacked two mosques in Yemen’s capital Sana’a during Friday prayers, the local Al-Azal television channel said, amid spiralling sectarian clashes.

At least 55 people were killed in the attacks on the Badr and al-Hashoosh mosques, Agence France-Presse reported, citing emergency services. The mosques are controlled by the Shiite Houthi group that seized the capital in September after consolidating their grip on the north of the country.

The attack came one day after President Abdurabuh Mansur Hadi was evacuated from his palace in Aden during intense gun battles between his fighters and rival troops loyal to Yemen’s former President Ali Abdullah Saleh. The fighting in the southern city, which marked a major escalation in the country’s conflict, left at least 15 dead.

US-Trained Special Forces Base Seized By Yemen Houthis

Al Jazeera: Houthis take over US-trained special forces base in Yemen capital

Base's troops were trained by US as elite counterterrorism unit; 10 killed in takeover

Armed men from Yemen's newly dominant Houthi group took over a special forces army base in the capital city of Sanaa early Wednesday, soldiers there said. The troops at the base had been trained and equipped by the United States as an elite counterterrorism unit during the rule of former President Ali Abullah Saleh, who was ousted by Arab Spring protests in 2011, military sources told Reuters.

The clashes, which lasted around six hours, started late Tuesday when Houthis shelled the camp with heavy weapons, soldiers from the camp said. At least 10 people were reportedly killed.

Heavy Fighting Reported Throughout Yemen As Sectarian Conflict Spreads

Scores Of Rebels Killed In Yemen Fighting -- Al Jazeera

Fighting between Houthi rebels and Sunni tribesman leaves 67 Houthis dead, as clashes rage for control of territory.

Renewed fighting between Sunni tribesmen and Shia Houthi rebels advancing into a town in central Yemen has killed dozens of people, as part of a growing struggle over territory and influence between the two sides.

Sources told Al Jazeera on Monday that clashes between Houthi fighters and Sunni tribes backed by al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) killed 67 Houthis in the Radaa district of Bayda province, 130km south east of Sanaa.

An attack on a Houthi gathering killed 23 Shia fighters, 15 were killed in a suicide car bombing and 29 others were killed by shelling and an attack at two posts.

Intense fighting erupted overnight, with the town rocked by explosions, rocket-propelled grenades and artillery by both sides.
