LONDON (AFP) — US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Friday she has no plans to visit the Middle East, as protests stepped up in major capitals and artists urged Barack Obama to speak out against Israel.
As Muslim religious and political leaders denounced Israel's deadly attacks on Gaza, Washington and its Middle East partners were working for a ceasefire to put an end to rocket attacks out of Hamas-run Gaza, Rice told reporters.
"We are working toward a ceasefire that would not allow a re-establishment of the status quo ante where Hamas can continue to launch rockets out of Gaza," she added.
Since Israel unleashed its air and sea campaign six days ago, at least 430 Palestinians have been killed, including 65 children, and 2,250 others wounded, according to Gaza medics.
