SCMP: Spanish capital ditches ‘unreliable’ Chinese coronavirus test kits

* Madrid stops using the kits and health ministry asks for them to be replaced after tests suggest they only have a 30 per cent accuracy level
* Spanish government is reported to have ordered 340,000 of the kits, which the Shenzhen-based manufacturer said had an 80 per cent strike rate

Spain’s capital has stopped using a rapid Covid-19 test kit made by a Chinese company after research suggested it was not accurate enough.

Doubts over the kits’ reliability emerged as the number of confirmed cases in Spain rose sharply on Thursday to 56,188, with 4,089 deaths. Worldwide, the disease has now infected more than 468,000 and killed over 21,000.

The Spanish Society of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology (SEIMC), one of Spain’s leading research institutes, said on its website it had found that nose swabs developed by Shenzhen Bioeasy Biotechnology had an accuracy rate of less than 30 per cent.

Spanish newspaper El PaĆs reported that the Madrid city government had decided to stop using the Bioeasy kits and the health ministry had asked Bioeasy to replace supplies.

  1. Gifting unreliable test kits is like murder. It makes the disease spread much more as it gives false results. On top the Chinese bragged that they are so nice and made such a big deal out of it.

First our people get infected by the Chinese virus

Then they make it worse by gifting faulty material risking thousands of lives

Then they insult us saying the virus is not from China ..such a lie

Then on top they withheld information for months -the doctor who tried to warn is was arrested by Chinese officials and then died

Fck that. .how are we not at war? How is this not a first strike weapon and made worse by all they do?

    I would mobilise all forces

  3. Jared Kushner’s shadow coronavirus task force appears to be violating both the Presidential Records Act (PRA) and Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA) by using private email accounts with no assurance their communications are being preserved and by meeting in secret, according to a letter sent today by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW). The failure of the White House to comply with any of the PRA and FACA requirements leaves the public in the dark about the work the shadow task force has done and the influence of private industries on the administration’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Kushner’s task force, composed of a team of allies from within the government and representatives from private industries, has operated adjacent to the official government task force spearheaded by Vice President Pence. With confusion over the shadow task force’s role and who its members are, and reports that the members of the shadow task force communicate using private email accounts, CREW has reason to believe the White House is not creating and maintaining accurate and complete records of the shadow task force’s activities as required by the PRA.

“If there was ever a time we need records and transparency, this is it. As the seriousness of this pandemic continues to grow, the public needs to understand who in the White House is making policy decisions, who from private industry is influencing those decisions, and how decisions to address this pandemic are being made,” said CREW Executive Director Noah Bookbinder. “After this crisis has passed, we will need to be able to look back at how this administration responded to the situation and have the full picture of what was going on behind closed doors in order to understand what we could do better in the future.”

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo acknowledged Friday the state did have a stockpile of unused ventilators, despite his complaints the federal government was not sending enough.

“Yes, they’re in a stockpile because that’s where they are supposed to be, because we don’t need them yet,” Cuomo said. “We need them for the apex, the apex isn’t here, so we’re gathering them in a stockpile.” - Governor Fredo Cuomo

"Cuomo’s comments demonstrate there is not an immediate shortage in ventilators in the city, despite alarming reports."
