Former CIA Director John Brennan was interviewed Friday by US Attorney John Durham's team as part of its inquiry into the investigators and intelligence officials behind the 2016 Russia election interference probe.

The interview took place at CIA headquarters and lasted for eight hours, said Nick Shapiro, Brennan's former deputy chief of staff and senior adviser.

'Brennan was informed by Mr. Durham that he is not a subject or a target of a criminal investigation and that he is only a witness to events that are under review,' Shapiro said in a statement.

Brennan led the CIA under the Obama administration as it and other intelligence agencies arrived at the conclusion that Russia had interfered in the 2016 election to benefit Donald Trump.

Washington Examiner: Trump rips CIA Director Brennan, suggests he may have leaked dossier

President-elect Trump slammed outgoing Central Intelligence Agency Director John Brennan, saying he did a poor job as the leader of the agency and suggesting he may have leaked the unverified dossier linking Trump to Russian intelligence.

Trump quoted a headline from Fox News' interview with Brennan earlier on Sunday when Brennan ripped Trump for "talking and tweeting" and questioning intelligence reports. Brennan said Trump is underestimating the Russians.

Trump said he couldn't do a worse job than Brennan regarding the Russians.

PBS: CIA chief addresses ‘doubters’ of Russian hacking report

Outgoing CIA Director John Brennan said Tuesday that those who doubt the connection between Russia and the hacking of Democratic Party email accounts, leading up to November’s election, should take a look at the forthcoming intelligence report “before they make those judgments.”

President-elect Donald Trump, among others, has questioned the assessment that Russia is behind the hacking, citing past intelligence community mistakes, including the finding of no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

“In the aftermath of that, there was a total review of the review process and the analytic process and the assessments that are done with the intelligence community with a number of steps that were taken to ensure that we’re going to be as accurate as possible,” said Brennan in an exit interview with PBS NewsHour co-anchor Judy Woodruff.

Al Arabiya/AFP: CIA head says Iraq, Syria might not ‘be put back together again’

Iraq and Syria have been so thoroughly damaged by warfare, sectarian conflict and killing that it is unclear they “can be put back together again,” CIA Director John Brennan said.

In an interview this week with the CTC Sentinel, a publication from the West Point military academy’s Combating Terrorism Center, the head of the Central Intelligence Agency said the current system of governance in the two countries might change altogether.

“I don’t know whether or not Syria and Iraq can be put back together again. There’s been so much bloodletting, so much destruction, so many continued, seething tensions and sectarian divisions,” Brennan said.

“I question whether we will see, in my lifetime, the creation of a central government in both of those countries that's going to have the ability to govern fairly.”

If Hillary Clinton wins the U.S. presidential election in November, John Brennan would like to continue his post as director of the Central Intelligence Agency.

Current and former U.S. intelligence officials tell me Brennan has signaled in private conversations that he loves the job and would like to keep it if she's elected. Plus, Brennan does not want to be perceived as a lame-duck director, particularly as he leads an ambitious plan to restructure the agency.

At the same time, Brennan has all but taken himself out of consideration to serve in a Trump administration. Speaking last month at the Brookings Institution, he said he would not execute an order to torture captured terrorists or target the families of terrorists, as Trump has promised he would authorize if elected president.

The Islamic State's ability to launch terror strikes remains a "formidable" threat despite military successes against the militant group in Iraq and Syria, CIA Director John Brennan said Thursday.

As the extremist group has lost territory in Iraq and Syria it has redoubled its efforts to encourage so-called lone wolf attacks or infiltrate operatives to strike targets outside the region, he said.

“Despite all our progress against ISIL on the battlefield and in the financial realm, our efforts have not reduced the group’s terrorism capability and global reach,” Brennan told the Senate Intelligence Committee, using an acronym for the Islamic State. “The resources needed for terrorism are very modest, and the group would have to suffer even heavier losses of territory, manpower and money for its terrorist capacity to decline significantly,” he said.

WASHINGTON—A two-year campaign by the U.S. and other countries to defeat Islamic State has failed to disrupt its capability to carry out terrorist attacks, Central Intelligence Agency Director John Brennan said Thursday.

Airstrikes and efforts to cut off its access to cash have been in place since mid-2014, but the group has continued to adjust its strategy to continue operating—and influencing others.

Mr. Brennan attributed Sunday’s terror attack in Orlando as an example of one that was inspired by the Islamic State’s online propaganda even though the killer, Omar Mateen, had “no direct links to the group.”

NBC: Former Spooks Criticize CIA Director John Brennan for Spying Comments

Former CIA officers are expressing exasperation over CIA director John Brennan's recent remark that "we don't steal secrets."

"Is he joking?" John Sipher, who spent decades spying in sensitive overseas posts and retired in 2014 as a senior manager, wrote in a column published Wednesday on a national security web site, the Cipher Brief.

In fact, Sipher and other former CIA officers say, stealing secrets is the CIA's "job one" overseas.

Brennan told National Public Radio last week that he objects to the idea that the CIA engages in theft.

"We uncover. We discover. We reveal. We obtain. We elicit. We solicit — all of that," he said.

Washington (CNN)Iran would build a nuclear bomb "at their own peril" if nuclear talks with the United States and other leading countries falter, Central Intelligence Agency Director John Brennan said Sunday.

"I think they realize that there's going to be tremendous costs and consequences and implications if they were to decide to go for a 'breakout,'" Brennan said on "Fox News Sunday," referring to Iran amassing enough of the materials necessary to build a nuclear bomb rather than use those materials for civil energy.

"There are a number of things that the United States has available to it to prevent Iran from getting a bomb," Brennan said. "President Obama has made it very clear that we are going to prevent Iran from having that type of nuclear weapon that they may have been going on track to obtain. Bloomberg: CIA Director Says Assad’s Collapse Would Risk Terrorist Takeover

(Bloomberg) -- The U.S. doesn’t want to see Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government collapse and create a vacuum for Islamic State and other militants to take over, Central Intelligence Agency Director John Brennan said.

When asked whether he fears what might follow if Assad’s regime collapsed, Brennan called it “a legitimate concern.”

“What we don’t want to do is to allow those extremist elements” including Islamic State, Jabhat al-Nusra, and al-Qaeda elements within Syria to seize power from a collapsed regime, Brennan told the Council on Foreign Relations in New York on Friday. “The last thing we want to do is to allow them to march into Damascus.”
