This Is How The CIA Is Waging A 'Hot War' Against Russia

Washington Post
: Ukrainian spies with deep ties to CIA wage shadow war against Russia

KYIV — The cluttered car carrying a mother and her 12-year-old daughter seemed barely worth the attention of Russian security officials as it approached a border checkpoint.

But the least conspicuous piece of luggage — a crate for a cat — was part of an elaborate, lethal plot. Ukrainian operatives had installed a hidden compartment in the pet carrier, according to security officials with knowledge of the operation, and used it to conceal components of a bomb.

Four weeks later, the device detonated just outside Moscow in an SUV being driven by the daughter of a Russian nationalist who had urged his country to “kill, kill, kill” Ukrainians, an explosion signaling that the heart of Russia would not be spared the carnage of war.

24 Women Claim Sexual Abuse At The CIA Has Been Covered Up

New York Daily News: At least 24 women claim sexual abuse at the CIA has been covered up

A sexual assault case involving a CIA officer trainee has sparked a movement among female agency employees, with at least two dozen already claiming instances of misconduct and suppression.

Officer trainee Ashkan Bayatpour was convicted Wednesday for an incident that took place in 2022, during which he attacked a colleague in a secluded stairwell, wrapped a scarf around her neck and tried to kiss her on the mouth.

The case was notable for the surprising way it displayed the CIA’s covert inner-workings in a public courtroom, and has since led to a flood of women stepping forward to make new accusations.

Newsweek Reveals What The CIA Is Doing In Ukraine

Newsweek: Exclusive: The CIA's Blind Spot about the Ukraine War

One of the biggest secrets of the Ukraine war is how much the CIA doesn't know. The Agency is as uncertain about Volodymyr Zelensky's thinking and intentions as it is about Vladimir Putin's. And as the Russian leader faces his biggest challenge in the aftermath of a failed mutiny, the Agency is straining to understand what the two sides will do—because President Joe Biden has determined that the United States (and Kyiv) will not undertake any actions that might threaten Russia itself or the survival of the Russian state, lest Putin escalate the conflict and engulf all of Europe in a new World War. In exchange, it expects that the Kremlin won't escalate the war beyond Ukraine or resort to the use of nuclear weapons.

America's stance is under threat because the near-mutiny by Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of the Wagner Group, raises the question as to whether Moscow has run out of options.

And while Newsweek does not confirm it, I am willing to bet that some of these CIA officers are directly involved in waging war against Russia.

CIA Launches Video Campaign To Recruit Russian Spies

Time: The CIA Is Now Trying to Recruit Russian Spies On Telegram

A man trudges through snow to a bleak office full of paperwork. A woman logs onto a government computer.

The weary bureaucrats seem to be reaching a breaking point with life in Vladimir Putin’s Russia.“Is this the life I dreamed of?” a speaker asks. The camera pans over photos of their children on their desks.

The cinematic video, with the gray tones of a Cold War thriller, is part of a U.S. effort to provide more tools for disaffected Russians who might be willing to provide information.

Created by the Central Intelligence Agency, the two-minute clip was posted Tuesday on a new Telegram channel that provides information on how to securely contact the U.S. agency using a Tor browser and encryption tools to send information via the dark web.

Daily Mail: CIA conspired with the Biden campaign and HELPED produce letter calling Hunter's laptop disinformation - and wanted it approved in a 'rush' before the 2020 election, Republicans claim in bombshell report

* Emails reveal editorial deliberation behind adding language that Hunter laptop 'has all the classic earmarks of a Soviet/Russian information operation'

The New Tork Times Praises CIA Director William Burns

New York Times: William Burns, a CIA Spymaster With Unusual Powers

WASHINGTON — To mark the 20th anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, CIA Director William Burns stood in the lobby of the agency’s headquarters in Langley, Virginia, and sought to exorcise the ghosts of the prewar intelligence failures that haunt the building to this day.

Addressing some 100 CIA officials on March 19, Burns acknowledged how the agency catastrophically blundered in its assessment that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. But he noted, according to two people present, that there was ample blame to go around. The culprits included a hubris-stricken Bush White House as well as the State Department — where Burns served at the time as a senior official — which he said had unwarranted confidence that it could derail the invasion plans.

Notably Burns added, “We’ve learned from that hard lesson.” The intelligence the agency and others collected on Russia’s plans to invade Ukraine, he said, “stands as a powerful example of that. It enabled us to provide strong, resolute and confident warning, to help the Ukrainians defend themselves and to help the president cement a strong coalition.”

CIA Director Burns Says Iran Could Enrich Uranium To Weapons-Grade Within Weeks If It Chooses

Times Of Israel: CIA chief: Iran could enrich uranium to weapons-grade within weeks if it chooses

William Burns says US doesn’t believe Iranian supreme leader has made decision to pursue weaponization, after Tehran found to have enriched uranium to 84% purity

The head of the Central Intelligence Agency has warned that Iran could enrich uranium to weapons-grade within weeks, but said the United States does not believe Iranian leaders have yet decided to do so.

The comment by William Burns, made during an interview with CBS News aired Saturday, came after inspectors from the UN atomic agency found uranium in Iran enriched to 84 percent purity, the closest its been to the 90% purity needed for nuclear weapons.

CIA Director Bill Burns Confirms Reports That China May Send Lethal Aid To Russia In Its War Against Ukraine

CBS News: CIA confirms possibility of Chinese lethal aid to Russia

In an exclusive interview with CBS News, CIA Director Bill Burns confirmed the possibility that China may send lethal aid to Russia in its war against Ukraine.

"We're confident that the Chinese leadership is considering the provision of lethal equipment," Burns told "Face the Nation" moderator Margaret Brennan on Friday.

The revelation that China's President Xi Jinping is mulling this escalation is a dramatic change from past Biden administration assessments. Earlier this month, Burns told students at Georgetown University that Xi had been "very reluctant to provide the kind of lethal weapons to Russia to use in Ukraine that the Russians are very much interested in."

Burns emphasized that China has not yet made the decision to transfer lethal aid to Russia, and shed light on the logic behind the Biden administration's decision to make this intelligence public.

WNU Editor: CIA Director William Burns says China has not yet made the decision to transfer lethal aid to Russia. But even though the above twitter video is a short clip, listening to him my gut tells me that the CIA Director already knows Beijing will soon start shipping lethal weaponry and ammunition to aid Russia in its war against Ukraine.

It is only a question of when the logistics are in place to make it happen, and if China's roadmap to end the Russia - Ukraine war is ignored. Since the US and its European allies have already rejected China's "peace plan" to end the war (link here), it looks like that decision may come sooner rather than later.

CIA Director Says The Next 6 Months Will Be 'Critical' For Ukraine

CBS News: CIA Director William Burns: Next 6 months will be "critical" in Ukraine war

CIA Director William Burns said Thursday that the next six months would be "critical" in the war in Ukraine with Russian President Vladimir Putin betting that waning Western interest and "political fatigue" could afford his military a new chance at making battlefield gains.

"Putin, I think, is betting right now that he can make time work for him," Burns said. "The key is going to be on the battlefield in the next six months, it seems to us."

"Puncturing Putin's hubris, making clear that he's not only not going to be able to advance further in Ukraine, but as every month goes by, he runs a greater and greater risk of losing the territory that he's illegally seized from Ukraine so far," he continued. "So this next period, I think, is going to be absolutely crucial."

Will The CIA Use Artificial Intelligence Platforms To Replace Human Analysts?

Federal News Serivice: CIA official ‘doesn’t envision’ chatbots replacing human analysts

The Central Intelligence Agency is using artificial intelligence and machine learning to parse through data and alert officials to global developments, but one of the agency’s top analysts doesn’t see ChatGPT or any other bots giving the president’s daily brief anytime soon.

Linda Weissgold, deputy director for analysis at the CIA, said the agency has made “a lot of progress” in using artificial intelligence and machine learning, with the agency developing many tools in-house.

“I think one of the most difficult things we have as analysts right now is the amount of data that’s out there, and how do you make sure that you don’t miss something?” Weissgold said during a Jan. 24 event hosted by the Intelligence and National Security Alliance.

CIA Director Traveled In Secret To Kyiv To Meet Ukraine President Zelensky And His Senior Intelligence Officials

Washington Post: CIA director holds secret meeting with Zelensky on Russia’s next steps

CIA Director William J. Burns traveled in secret to Ukraine’s capital at the end of last week to brief President Volodymyr Zelensky on his expectations for what Russia is planning militarily in the coming weeks and months, said a U.S. official and other people familiar with the visit. Burns’s travel comes at a critical juncture in the 11-month war.

Russian forces are mounting a massive assault near the eastern city of Bakhmut that is causing many casualties on both sides and forcing Ukraine to weigh its resources there as it prepares a major counteroffensive elsewhere in the country.

Top of mind for Zelensky and his senior intelligence officials during the meeting was how long Ukraine could expect U.S. and Western assistance to continue following Republicans’ takeover of the House and a drop-off in support of Ukraine aid among parts of the U.S. electorate, said people familiar with the meeting.

All spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the private high-level engagement.

Former Aide Says CIA Staff Made A 'Suicide Pact' To Resign If Trump Fired Director Gina Haspel

CIA staff reportedly had a 'suicide pact' to all resign if Donald Trump replaced director Gina Haspel with supporter Kash Patel. Carlos Barria/Reuters

Insider: CIA staff made a 'suicide pact' to resign if Trump fired director Gina Haspel, former aide says

* CIA staff pledged to quit if Donald Trump fired its director, Alyssa Farah Griffin said.

* She spoke about the "suicide pact" in testimony to the January 6 committee.

* At the time, Trump was said to be considering replacing Gina Haspel with supporter Kash Patel.

CIA staff had a "suicide pact" to resign if Donald Trump fired director Gina Haspel, a former aide to the president told the House's January 6 select committee.

Alyssa Farah Griffin said that the threat of a mass walkout stopped Trump from replacing Haspel with supporter Kash Patel, according to transcripts released by the committee in late December.

"I will share one thing that I cannot confirm myself, but it's worth looking into," said Farah Griffin, a former director of communications at the White House.

She gave the testimony in April 2022. "I have been told that they tried to fire Gina Haspel, the CIA director, and install Kash Patel."

WNU Editor: If true. And what we now know from the Twitter files. President Trump should have fired Gina Haspel. The US would be in a far better place today with no blood and vision at the top.

In the end Gina Haspel was replaced (fired?) by the Biden White House. And there was no mass resignation.

CIA Director Bill Burns Discusses The Russia - Ukraine War And The Intelligence Challenges That Are Posed By China

* Marlowe added the CIA is looking for Russians who are "disgusted" with the war in Ukraine.

The Central Intelligence Agency is looking for Russians who are "disgusted" with the Ukraine war to recruit them as spies, David Marlowe, the agency's deputy director of operations, said last week.

Marlowe told an audience at George Mason University's Hayden Center in Fairfax County, Virginia, that Putin was "at his best moment the day before he invaded [Ukraine]" because he had "all the power that he is ever going to have."

"He squandered every single bit of that," Marlowe said, before adding: "We're looking around the world for Russians who are as disgusted with [Putin's actions] as we are. Because we're open for business."

Former CIA Intelligence Officer Suggests Using ‘Counterterrorism’ Strategies Against The Republican Party

Marc Polymeropoulos (former Senior Intelligence Service officer at the CIA), NBC: The GOP needs a counterradicalization strategy

It’s not Democrats who must act. We need to find strong voices within the Republican Party. I worked in counterterrorism operations for nearly my entire career at the CIA before retiring in 2019.

The battle we engaged in with international terrorist groups like Al Qaeda wasn’t just with their legions of foot soldiers but with their highly effective propaganda arms as well. The U.S. and our allies considered those propagandists fundamental cogs in a terror group’s machinery, and just as culpable as any other terrorist. So we held them accountable when innocent civilians were killed.

Why are these propagandists so dangerous? Because, while they might not supply weapons, they can effectively radicalize individuals to obtain them and put them to use — even from the comfort of their own homes via the internet. They do that by sending the message that violence is permissible, even admirable, in a process of normalization that breaks down the resistance most humans usually experience to such acts. They give them a cause to justify the need for acting out violently, which goads foot soldiers to take steps toward action. And they can provide suggested targets and detailed information on how to carry out attacks.

The podcast comes during the CIA’s 75th anniversary — a time, Burns said, for the agency to "reflect on how we need to organize ourselves to navigate successfully what is an incredibly complicated international terrain."

Burns warned that terrain features a "major power competition with rising powers like China," which he referred to as a "central geopolitical challenge."
