Backlash After Macron's Taiwan Comments And The Need For Europe To Stand Apart From The U.S.

Washington Post: Macron's Taiwan comments anger allies, delight Beijing

BRUSSELS — More people are mad at French President Emmanuel Macron.

After weeks of protests over an unpopular pension overhaul plan at home, the French president now faces outrage from allies abroad over his chummy trip to China and remarks on the need for Europe to stand apart from the United States on Taiwan and other issues.

The visit and its aftermath have angered politicians and analysts on both sides of the Atlantic, highlighting gaps between the U.S. and French approach to China, showcasing division within the Eropean Union — and probably delighting Beijing.

The interview in question took place during a three-day visit to China that raised eyebrows for its surprisingly upbeat tone, considering that Beijing has yet to condemn Russia’s war in Ukraine.

French President Macron Says Europe Must Resist Pressure To Become ‘America’s Followers’

Politico: Europe must resist pressure to become ‘America’s followers,’ says Macron

The ‘great risk’ Europe faces is getting ‘caught up in crises that are not ours,’ French president says in interview.

ABOARD COTAM UNITÉ (FRANCE’S AIR FORCE ONE) — Europe must reduce its dependency on the United States and avoid getting dragged into a confrontation between China and the U.S. over Taiwan, French President Emmanuel Macron said in an interview on his plane back from a three-day state visit to China.

Speaking with POLITICO and two French journalists after spending around six hours with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his trip, Macron emphasized his pet theory of “strategic autonomy” for Europe, presumably led by France, to become a “third superpower.”

He said “the great risk” Europe faces is that it “gets caught up in crises that are not ours, which prevents it from building its strategic autonomy,” while flying from Beijing to Guangzhou, in southern China, aboard COTAM Unité, France’s Air Force One.

French President Macron Warns France To Prepare For A Tough Winter

France 24: Macron warns France of 'the end of abundance' and tough times ahead

After a summer marked by drought, massive wildfires and the war in Ukraine, French President Emmanuel Macron delivered a stark speech on Wednesday at the first cabinet meeting following the summer holiday break, warning of tough months ahead as the world faces a possible "end of abundance".

"I believe that we are in the process of living through a tipping point or great upheaval. Firstly because we are living through... what could seem like the end of abundance," said Macron, 44.

The speech appeared designed to prepare the country for what promises to be a difficult winter ahead, with energy prices rising sharply and many families struggling with inflation.

French President Macron Says Russia Must Not Be Humiliated In Ukraine

The Guardian: Russia must not be humiliated in Ukraine, says Emmanuel Macron

French president says door must be left open to allow for improvement in diplomatic relations after war

Russia must not be humiliated in Ukraine, Emmanuel Macron has said, to allow an improvement in diplomatic relations between the west and Moscow whenever the war comes to an end.

The French president said his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, had made a “historic and fundamental” error in invading Ukraine, but that nevertheless a wider escalation in hostilities had to be avoided.

Giving an interview to a group of regional newspapers in his home country, Macron said: “We must not humiliate Russia so that the day the fighting stops, we can build a way out through diplomatic channels.”

Is The Scruffy Look In?

New pictures have emerged of Macron - arguably the EU's most clean-cut figure who is seldom seen wearing anything other than an immaculate fitted suit, coiffed hair and a clean shave - sat behind a desk in the Elysee palace wearing a dark hoodie, jeans and a face full of stubble. Some believe it is a marketing tactic to appear more relatable, piggybacking off the popularity of Zelensky

Daily Mail: Is Macron trying to copy Zelensky? French leader - always seen immaculately turned out in a navy suit - displays stubble, jeans and hoodie in 'war room' pics, copying Ukraine leader's style

* French President Emmanuel Macron has been pictured in remarkably laid-back attire in the Élysée Palace

* The French leader has hardly ever been caught in anything other than a dark, slim-fitting suit and tie

* But the seemingly candid shots display Macron at work sporting stubble and an oversized hoodie with jeans

* The images, released by the President's official photographer, were generally well received on social media

* But some have accused Macron of launching a marketing ploy to look more like Ukrainian leader Zelensky

* Zelensky has become instantly recognisable in plain hoodies and t-shirts since the invasion of Ukraine began

* The Ukrainian leader has become incredibly popular for his selfie videos and agreeable demeanour

The French have long been known as trendsetters and purveyors of fine fashion, but it appears that President Emmanuel Macron has started taking style tips from the most in-vogue European leader.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has become an instantly recognisable figure amid the Russian invasion of his country, and has spent the past three weeks clad in simple khaki hoodies, jackets and t-shirts as he co-ordinates his country's defences.

The Ukrainian leader has understandably ditched the suit and tie that would typically befit a head of state for more utilitarian attire as he splits his time between the presidential palace and the streets of war-torn Kyiv.

French President Macron Blasts Social Media Platforms For Banning Trump

French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday lambasted social media networks for their decisions to “suddenly cut the mic” as soon as they were sure Donald Trump was leaving power, particularly as they'd effectively “egged President Trump” on during his presidency.

Why it matters: Speaking at an Atlantic Council forum, Macron said the decisions to ban Trump by platforms like Twitter and Facebook may have seemed sensible in the short term, but did not provide a “democratic answer.”

Other world leaders like Germany's Angela Merkel have previously raised similar concerns.

What he’s saying: Macron added that big tech had “killed all the platforms where it was possible for [Trump] and his supporters to express themselves."

French President Macron: NATO's Enemy Is Terrorism, Not Russia Or China

RFE: Macron Says Russia, China Not NATO Allies' Common Enemies -- Terrorism Is

French President Emmanuel Macron has said that he stands by comments he made three weeks ago when he described NATO as "brain-dead," and he defended his push for dialogue with Russia.

In a November 7 interview with the Economist magazine, Macron deplored a lack of strategic cooperation among NATO members, and pointed to what he saw as a waning commitment to the Western military alliance by the United States.

The assessment drew sharp criticism from allies, with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg warning against undermining the transatlantic alliance.

WNU Editor: French President Macron is partially correct. When it comes to NATO Russia in some cases is a diplomatic competitor, it is an economic partner in many others, and it is not the enemy militarily even though I know many will disagree with that assessment. China is more complicated. They are not a diplomatic threat, but economically they are a competitor, and their military doctrine is to be very aggressive in Asia. Is it NATO's business to be involved in Asia? I think now. French President Macron is 100% right that NATO members should be pushing harder to have a dialogue with Russia.

France 24: France's Macron defends 'brain death' criticism after talks with NATO chief

NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg on Thursday confronted Emmanuel Macron in Paris over the French president’s claim the alliance is suffering “brain death”, a charge that has set the stage for a testy NATO summit in London next week.

Addressing reporters after the talks, Macron said his damning assessment of NATO's crisis had been a "useful wake-up call" for the alliance.

Macron referred to NATO as being "brain-dead" in an interview earlier this month with The Economist magazine, in which he lamented the lack of strategic coordination between Europe and the United States

French President Macron: NATO Is Experiencing 'Brain Death'

ABC News Online: NATO is suffering from a 'brain death' — the EU is the cure, says Emmanuel Macron

French President Emmanuel Macron says Washington's antipathy to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) alliance is causing its "brain death", which should prompt the European Union (EU) to step up as a world power.

"What we are currently experiencing is the brain death of NATO," Mr Macron told The Economist magazine.

He said the United States under President Donald Trump appeared to be turning its back on Europe, notably by pulling troops out of North–East Syria without notice.

Will French President Macron Risk a Referendum To Counter Yellow-Vest Protestors?

Faced with protests, French President Emmanuel Macron has hinted he is considering holding a referendum (AFP Photo/Ludovic MARIN)

Clare Byrne, AFP: Double or quits: will Macron risk a referendum?

Paris (AFP) - President Emmanuel Macron could be set to organise France's first referendum in 14 years to end months of "yellow vest" protests, but analysts say the move is a risky gamble.

Macron has clawed back some lost popularity in recent weeks by throwing himself into his "grand national debate", a series of townhall events aimed at tamping down the yellow vest revolt which began in November.

But the real test for the 41-year-old will be what he does with the feedback from hundreds of conversations underway around the country, as well as the 700,000-plus contributions made online.

PARIS — French President Emmanuel Macron delivered a rebuke of President Donald Trump’s “America first” approach to international affairs at a ceremony on Sunday commemorating the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.

“Nationalism is a betrayal of patriotism,” Macron said. “By saying, ‘Our interests first, who cares about the others,’ we erase what a nation holds dearest, what gives it life, what gives it grace and what is essential: its moral values."
