FOX News: FBI worked with Ukraine intelligence agency to remove social media accounts: House Judiciary report 

The FBI colluded with a Ukrainian intelligence agency in an effort to disrupt Russian disinformation campaigns by flagging social media accounts in a failed effort that ensnared a verified Russian-language U.S. State Department account and others, the House Judiciary Committee said in a report released Monday. 

The report said the FBI partnered with the SBU, one of Ukraine's intelligence agencies, to flag the accounts believed to have spread Russian disinformation. Both agencies flagged American accounts for removal, as well as those belonging to American journalists, the report said.

CNBC: Chinese hackers outnumber FBI cyber staff 50 to 1, bureau director says 

* U.S. cyber intelligence staff is vastly outnumbered by Chinese hackers, Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Christopher Wray told Congress as he pleaded for more money for the agency. 

* Wray said the country has “a bigger hacking program than every other major nation combined and have stolen more of our personal and corporate data than all other nations—big or small—combined.” 

* The agency is requesting about $63 million to help it beef up its cyber staff with 192 new positions. 

U.S. cyber intelligence staff is vastly outnumbered by Chinese hackers, Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Christopher Wray told Congress as he pleaded for more money for the agency. 

“To give you a sense of what we’re up against, if each one of the FBI’s cyber agents and intel analysts focused exclusively on the China threat, Chinese hackers would still outnumber FBI Cyber personnel by at least 50 to 1,” Wray said in prepared remarks for a budget hearing before a House Appropriations subcommittee on Thursday. 

The disclosure highlights the massive scale of cyber threats the U.S. is facing, particularly from China. Wray said the country has “a bigger hacking program than every other major nation combined and have stolen more of our personal and corporate data than all other nations—big or small—combined.”

Russia experts are divided on whether the FBI recruiting effort will prove successful 

The FBI has turned to social media to help it ramp up its Russian recruitment and intelligence gathering as the war in Ukraine continues to rage with no end in sight. 

It's a move receiving mixed reviews from Russia experts. In a video posted to Facebook and Twitter, scenes from the U.S. capital and the Russian embassy are displayed as a voice speaking in Russian tells the listener that the FBI can change their future if they can provide the U.S. with intelligence. 

 The narrator says the FBI is looking for spies, expats and anyone with information on countering the Kremlin.

 FBI Director Christopher Wray on Tuesday publicly acknowledged the agency’s stance that the COVID-19 pandemic likely resulted from an accidental laboratory leak in China.

“The FBI has for quite some time now assessed that the origins of the pandemic are most likely a potential lab incident in Wuhan,” Wray told Fox News.

FBI Is Planning To Build A New Headquarters That Will Be Twice The Size Of The Pentagon

The GOP House can stop the project and rein in a runaway bureau. 

The federal government is proceeding with plans to build a new FBI headquarters complex twice the size of the Pentagon building. 

Riveted into the colossal new project are woke regulations to ensure that the FBI center will comply with diversity, equity, LGBTQ+, and climate change political goals. 

The plan, unveiled last September, has received little attention. For years the FBI has sought to vacate its present headquarters, a brutalist concrete bunker on stilts and occupying two city blocks between the White House and the Capitol. 

Plans for the new FBI headquarters specify that it will be built on one of three sites in suburban Virginia and Maryland. Those sites are large parcels of 58, 61, and 80 acres. 

That means, at minimum, the new FBI headquarters complex would be twice the size of the Pentagon building. Covering about 29 acres plus a five-acre courtyard, the Pentagon, until recently, was the largest office building on earth.

 CNBC: Former top FBI counterintelligence agent Charles McGonigal charged with violating Russia sanctions 

* The former top FBI agent for counterintelligence in New York has been charged with a former Soviet diplomat with violating U.S. sanctions on Russia by providing services to the oligarch Oleg Deripaska. 

* Charles McGonigal also was charged Monday in Washington in connection with accepting $225,000 in cash — while working at the FBI — from a former employee of a foreign intelligence service. 

* “Mr. McGonigal betrayed his solemn oath to the United States in exchange for personal gain and at the expense of our national security,” said FBI Assistant Director in Charge Donald Alway. 

The former top FBI agent in New York for counterintelligence was arrested with an ex-Russian diplomat and charged with violating U.S. sanctions on Russia after he left the FBI by trying to help the oligarch Oleg Deripaska get off the sanctions list, federal prosecutors said Monday. 

The ex-agent, Charles McGonigal separately was charged Monday in federal court in Washington, D.C., in connection with accepting $225,000 in cash — while working at the FBI — from a person who had business interests in Europe who had been an employee of Albania’s foreign intelligence service. 

That other person later became an FBI source in a criminal probe of foreign political lobbying, which McGonigal was supervising, authorities said.

A Twitter employee wrote in a February 2020 email that the company's Safety, Content & Law Enforcement (SCALE) had 'collected $3,415,323' in less than two years from the FBI for 'law-enforcement related projects.' 

The email, which was revealed by journalist Michael Shellenberger, stated that SCALE had instituted a 'reimbursement program' in exchange for devoting staff hours to 'processing requests from the FBI'.

As to what is my take. There does appear to be enough evidence that the FBI did try to influence Twitter on what could be posted. This should surprise no one. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg himself admitted the FBI influenced his company to ban certain posts, so why not Twitter .... Zuckerberg tells Rogan FBI warning prompted Biden laptop story censorship (BBC). 

So what should be done? 

In the 1970s the US Senate launched the Church Committee Hearings to investigate abuses by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), National Security Agency (NSA), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) (link here). It looks like the US needs another similar hearing to investigate alleged abuses from these agencies in 2023. 

 Update: One thing that I find remarkable about the release of the Twitter files is the almost complete absence of legacy media coverage of this story. I know in Canada there has been zero coverage from the main networks. So the question is why? Hmmm .... Dinesh D'Souza may have a point (see below).

The Justice-backed FBI raid of former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago winter resort home has increased the percentage of people who believe that President Joe Biden is using the G-men as his “personal Gestapo.”

Authorities erected barricades around the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) headquarters office in Washington, D.C. over the weekend. The bureau claims it has seen an increase in threats against the FBI and its agents in the wake of the FBI’s raid on former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home last week. Associated Press reporter Mike Balsamo tweeted photos of the new barricades around the FBI headquarters.

NBC: FBI Director Wray says scale of Chinese spying in the U.S. 'blew me away' 

The FBI opens a new China-related counterintelligence investigation every 12 hours on average, and it now has over 2,000 such cases. 

Chinese spying in the U.S. has become so widespread that the FBI is launching an average of two counterintelligence investigations a day to counter the onslaught, FBI Director Christopher Wray said in an interview.

Wray has become the U.S. government’s most outspoken critic of the Chinese government’s spying. 

In an exclusive NBC News interview, he said the sheer scale of Chinese efforts to steal U.S. technology shocked him when he became FBI director in 2017.

“This one blew me away. And I’m not the kind of guy that uses words like ‘blown away’ easily," he said. 

Wray said the FBI is opening a new China related counter-intelligence investigation on average every 12 hours, with over 2,000 such cases currently underway.

Adoration of “G-men,” once celebrated in the nonpartisan war on Al Capone and organized crime and now leading the effort to round up Jan. 6 Capitol riot suspects and Trump supporters, is apparently waning. 

In the latest sign of how today’s politics is dividing support for major Washington institutions, the latest Rasmussen Reports survey shows more people than not view the FBI as the punishing political arm of President Joe Biden.

FBI Releases First Declassified 9/11 Document

 

Daily Mail: FBI releases first secret 9/11 file: Saudi embassy official let two hijackers stay at his apartment and helped them in LA before the attack, was 'facilitator' for Al-Qaeda and distributed extremist Muslim literature 

* The newly-released document details a 2015 FBI interview with a staffer who worked at the Saudi Consulate in Los Angeles prior to the 9/11 attacks 

* The man is only referred to in the document as PII 

* PII is accused of helping 9/11 hijackers Nawaf al-Hazmi and Khalid al-Mihdhar shortly after they arrived in the United States 

* Families of 9/11 victims are eager to probe potential Saudi government links to the attack 

The FBI has released its first declassified 9/11 document exactly 20 years after the deadly terror attack which claimed the lives of 2,996 people. 

The document was published Saturday evening, a week after President Biden signed an executive order directing the agency to make the secret files available to the public for the first time. 

The order to release the documents came amid significant pressure from the families of 9/11 victims, who are eager to probe potential Saudi government links to the attack.

Daily Mail: FBI has found 'SCANT' evidence the Capitol riot was an organized plot by Trump supporters to overturn the election, says new report despite Democrats' insistence it was a COUP 

* More than 570 alleged Capitol riot participants have been arrested by the feds 

* About 90 to 95 percent are 'one-off cases,' a former senior official said 

* Even organized groups like the Oathkeepers and Proud Boys who aimed to breach the Capitol had no serious plans on what to do once inside, the FBI says 

* FBI so far has no evidence that Trump or people directly in his orbit were involved in organizing the violence on January 6, despite his incendiary speech 

* Violent Trump supporters stormed the Capitol after a Stop the Steal rally in DC 

* Nine people died in connection with the MAGA riot, including five officers 

The FBI has found scant evidence that the January 6 attack on the US Capitol was the result of an organized plot to overturn the presidential election result, according to four current and former law enforcement officials. 

Though federal officials have arrested more than 570 alleged participants, the FBI at this point believes the violence was not centrally coordinated by far-right groups or prominent supporters of then-President Donald Trump, according to the sources, who have been either directly involved in or briefed regularly on the wide-ranging investigations. 

A former senior law enforcement official with knowledge of the probe said that '90 to 95 percent of these are one-off cases.'

New York Times Says The Biden Administration Will Keep Christopher Wray As FBI Director

The Hill: Biden plans to keep on Wray as FBI director: report 

President-elect Joseph Biden reportedly plans to keep Christopher Wray as his FBI chief if Wray is still in the top post by the time the Biden administration begins. 

A senior Biden official told The New York Times that Biden’s team was “not removing the F.B.I. director unless Trump fired him.” 

Such a decision by Biden would be a return to the norm practiced by previous administrations. Generally, FBI directors, who are Senate-confirmed, are able to serve their full 10-year terms. Security experts have argued that doing so helps to create a sense of stability in the intelligence community.
