FOX News: Indian Navy rescues crew of US-owned ship attacked by Houthis 

M/V Genco Picardy was hit in the Gulf of Aden on Wednesday 

The Indian Navy says one of its guided-missile destroyers on Thursday has rescued the crew of a U.S.-owned ship that was attacked by Yemen’s Houthi rebels near the Red Sea. 

The military branch wrote in a post on X that INS Visakhapatnam, which was in the region already for anti-piracy operations, responded to a distress call from the M/V Genco Picardy following an attack in the Gulf of Aden. 

All 22 crew members onboard the ship, which included nine Indians, were reported safe by the Indian Navy. It added that a fire onboard the M/V Genco Picardy was under control and an inspection of the vessel determined that it was safe to continue transiting to its next port of call.

U.S. and U.K. airstrikes on Houthi positions in Yemen have not made the Red Sea any safer for shipping.

ABC News: US strikes Houthi fighters again amid continued attacks on ships off Yemen: Officials  

The group has targeted vessels in response to the Israel-Hamas war. 

The U.S. has launched a new retaliatory strike against Houthi targets in Yemen amid the group's continued attacks on international ships in the area, officials said Wednesday. 

Five areas were targeted in the U.S. strikes on Yemen: the governorates of Hodeidah, Taiz, Dhamar, Bayda, and Saada, the Sanaa-Saba press agency, the Houthi state media claimed. 

CENTCOM said in a post on X Wednesday night that the strike targeted 14 Iranian-made Houthi missiles "that were loaded to be fired in Houthi controlled areas in Yemen.”

CNBC: Biden designates Houthis terrorist group, as U.S. ramps up Red Sea counterstrikes 

* The U.S. has designated the Yemen-based Houthis as specially designated global terrorists. 

* The State Department revoked the Houthis’ foreign terrorist organization label in 2021, in response to humanitarian groups that claimed it was accelerating a famine in Yemen. 

* The Houthis’ attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea have threatened global trade over the past months. 

The U.S. State Department on Wednesday designated the Iranian-backed, Yemen-based Houthi rebels as specially designated global terrorists, or SDGTs, in an effort to deter further attacks against commercial ships traversing the Red Sea. 

The SDGT designation triggers an asset freeze aimed at cutting off Houthi financing, but will not take effect until mid-February. The SDGT sanctions specifically do not apply to food, medicine, fuel and other humanitarian assistance going to the Yemeni people. 

“If the Houthis cease their attacks, we can consider delisting the designation,” a senior administration official said Tuesday on a call with reporters.

CNN: US carries out additional strikes against Houthis in Yemen 

The US military launched new strikes against Houthi targets inside Yemen on Tuesday, targeting anti-ship ballistic missiles controlled by the Iran-backed rebel group, a two US defense officials told CNN on Tuesday.

US forces struck and destroyed four Houthi anti-ship ballistic missiles that were preparing to launch from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen, the officials said, adding that they presented an imminent threat to merchant and US Navy vessels in the area. 

A few hours later, however, the Houthis launched an anti-ship ballistic missile into international shipping lanes in the Southern Red Sea, hitting the M/V Zografia, a Maltese flagged bulk carrier, the officials said. The ship did not suffer significant damage and was able to continue its journey.

The U.S. Navy on Tuesday announced what's considered the first seizure of Iranian weapons bound for Yemen since Houthi rebels began their campaign of attacks against international merchant shipping in the Red Sea two months ago – yet the two Navy SEALs lost at sea during the mission carried out last week still remain missing amid search and rescue efforts. 

On Jan. 11, 2024, while conducting a flag verification, U.S. CENTCOM Navy forces "conducted a night-time seizure of a dhow conducting illegal transport of advanced lethal aid from Iran to resupply Houthi forces in Yemen as part of the Houthis’ ongoing campaign of attacks against international merchant shipping," U.S. Central Command said in a statement Tuesday.

Commanders and advisors from Iran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps are on the ground in Yemen and playing a direct role in Houthi rebel attacks on commercial traffic in the Red Sea. 

The IRGC has stationed missile and drone trainers and operators in Yemen, as well as personnel providing tactical intelligence support to the Houthis, U.S. and Middle East officials told Semafor. The IRGC, through its overseas Qods Force, has also overseen the transfer to the Houthis of the attack drones, cruise missiles, and medium-range ballistic missiles used in a string of strikes on Red Sea and Israeli targets in recent weeks, these officials said.

BBC: Houthi missile hits US-owned container ship in Gulf of Aden 

Houthi rebels have hit a US-owned cargo ship with a ballistic missile off the coast of Yemen, the US says. 

The vessel, Gibraltar Eagle, reported "no injuries or significant damage", according to the United States military command for the Middle East (Centcom). 

The Marshall Islands-flagged vessel is continuing on its journey in the Gulf of Aden. Iranian-backed Houthis have been attacking ships since November, in protest at Israel's war against Hamas. 

Shipping company Eagle Bulk Shipping said the bulk carrier was carrying steel products and was about 160km (100 miles) offshore in the Gulf of Aden when it was hit.

It said the vessel "suffered limited damage to a cargo hold but is stable and is heading out of the area".

Business Insider: The Houthi rebels likely hid their missiles and drones before the US-led air attacks and retain about 75% of their firepower, report says

The Houthi rebels retain around 75% of their missile- and drone-firing capabilities despite US-led attacks against the group in Yemen earlier this week, The New York Times reported, citing US officials. 

Army Lt. Gen. Douglas Sims II, the director of operations of the Joint Staff, seemed confident on Friday that the US and the UK strikes had achieved their intended goal of disrupting the Houthi's offensive capabilities by targeting munitions depots, missile launching systems and air defense radar systems. 

"We know precisely the capability that the Houthis have been employing against the Red Sea and the Bab al Mandab," Sims II said.

France 24: UN report: More than 11,000 children killed or maimed in Yemen civil war 

More than 11,000 children are known to have been killed or maimed in Yemen's civil war since it escalated nearly eight years ago, the United Nations said Monday. 

"The true toll of this conflict is likely to be far higher," said the children's agency UNICEF about the casualties of the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

"Thousands of children have lost their lives, hundreds of thousands more remain at risk of death from preventable disease or starvation," said UNICEF executive director Catherine Russell.

Reuters: Yemen president cedes powers to council as Saudi Arabia pushes to end war 

ADEN (Reuters) -Yemen's president delegated power to a presidential council and dismissed his deputy on Thursday in moves aimed at supporting U.N.-led efforts to revive negotiations to end a bitter seven-year war. 

Riyadh announced $3 billion in financial aid to the Saudi-backed government after the announcement by President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi. 

It called for talks with the Houthi group that controls the north and has been battling a Saudi-led coalition. 

Yemen's warring sides, in a major breakthrough, agreed on a two-month truce that began on Saturday, the first since 2016. 

The deal eased a coalition blockade on areas held by the Houthis, who ousted Hadi's government from the capital, Sanaa, in late 2014.

Reuters: Yemen's warring parties agree two-month truce in major breakthrough 

ADEN — The warring sides in Yemen’s seven-year conflict have for the first time in years agreed a nationwide truce, which would also allow fuel imports into Houthi-held areas and some flights operating from Sanaa airport, the United Nations envoy said on Friday. 

The U.N.-brokered deal between a Saudi-led coalition and the Houthi group aligned with Iran is the most significant step yet towards ending a conflict that has killed tens of thousands and pushed millions into hunger. 

The last coordinated cessation of hostilities nationwide was during peace talks in 2016. U.N. special envoy Hans Grundberg said the two-month truce would come into effect on Saturday and could be renewed with consent of the parties. 

“The parties accepted to halt all offensive military air, ground and maritime operations inside Yemen and across its borders; they also agreed for fuel ships to enter into Hodeidah ports and commercial flights to operate in and out of Sanaa airport to predetermined destinations in the region,” he said in a statement.

France 24: Yemen PM accuses Huthis of 'escalation' with Aden car bomb 

Yemen's internationally-recognised prime minister on Monday accused the Iran-backed Huthi rebels of escalating his country's conflict with a deadly car bomb attack in the southern city of Aden. 

"This is an escalation of violence by Huthi militias... A radical government in Iran is pushing the Huthis towards more violence," Maeen Abdulmalek Saeed told reporters in Cairo, a day after the blast that left six dead. 

The bombing targeted a convoy of Aden governor Ahmed Lamlas and Salem al-Socotri, a government minister, both of whom survived, a security source said.

France 24: Dozens killed in northern Yemen as battle for strategic city of Marib flares 

Renewed battles between government forces and Huthi rebels over the strategic city of Marib in northern Yemen have left 47 dead, including 16 pro-government forces, military sources said Saturday. 

The Iran-backed rebels are seeking to seize control of Marib and its surrounding oil fields, the Yemeni government's last stronghold in the north after six years of fighting that has plunged the country into a humanitarian crisis. 

Diplomatic efforts to secure a ceasefire in Yemen had intensified, in parallel with the fierce campaign for control of Marib, which has left thousands dead on both sides. 

But with no agreement in sight, the fighting has flared again after a lull over the past month.

Breaking Defense: Houthis Lay Sea Mines In Red Sea; Coalition Boasts Few Minesweepers 

Middle Eastern sources say most of the naval mines are floating mines the Houthis release into the open sea. They are supplemented by networks of mines laid at a depth of 16 meters. They are triggered by the passage of ships above them. 

TEL AVIV: The Houthi rebels in Yemen have planted sea mines in the southern part of the Red Sea where US Navy and other allied ships are sailing, posing a possibly grave threat to shipping. 

The Saudi-led coalition tried to tackle the problem but they have few useful tools. The Arab coalition said Friday that it had discovered and destroyed a marine mine planted by the Houthi militia in the southern Red Sea, Saudi state TV reported. The coalition said it was an Iranian-made Sadaf mine. That makes 171 sea mines found and destroyed, the coalition said. 

According to some estimates the Houthis have scattered “some hundreds of sea mines ” in the Red and Arabian seas. Experts say that most of the mines are of the floating type and were detected by naval or cargo ships that have spotted them and reported.

Reuters: Saudi-led coalition says it's behind military buildup on Red Sea island 

DUBAI (Reuters) - The Saudi-led military coalition engaged in Yemen said on Thursday it had established a presence on a strategic island at the entrance to the Red Sea to counter perceived threats to maritime trade from the Iran-aligned Houthi movement. 

The statement was issued in response to an Associated Press report citing Yemeni officials saying the United Arab Emirates was behind an air base that has emerged on Perim Island, also known as Mayun, in the vital Bab al-Mandab strait. 

The AP said it obtained satellite images showing a 1.85 km runway on Perim along with three hangars. 

“All equipment currently present on Mayun Island is under control of the Coalition Command, and is situated there to... counter the Houthi militia, secure maritime navigation and support West Coast forces,” said a statement on Saudi state news agency SPA, citing an unnamed official in the coalition.

The U.S. Navy has seized an arms shipment of thousands of illicit assault weapons, machines guns and sniper rifles hidden aboard a ship in the Arabian Sea likely headed for Yemen, officials have said. 

The U.S. fifth fleet, based in Bahrain, announced on Sunday that the guided-missile cruiser USS Monterey discovered the weapons aboard a stateless dhow - a traditional Mideast sailing ship - in an operation that began Thursday in the northern reaches of the Arabian Sea off Oman and Pakistan. 

An American defense official said the weapons resembled previous shipments which have been intercepted that were bound for Houthi rebels in Yemen.

Marib and its surrounding oil fields make up the last significant pocket of government-held territory in the north of the war-torn country 

At least 65 fighters have been killed over the past two days in the battle for Yemen's government-controlled Marib as Houthi rebels have advanced towards the city centre, military sources told AFP. 

The rebels have taken full control of the northwest Kassara battlefront and made progress on western front lines despite air strikes by the Saudi-led coalition that backs Yemen's government. 

Marib and its surrounding oil fields make up the last significant pocket of government-held territory in the north, the rest of which is under rebel control, including the capital, Sanaa.

Al Jazeera: Fighting intensifies between Houthis, Yemen gov’t forces in Marib 

Dozens of fighters from both sides killed in ‘unabated’ fighting since Friday in Yemen’s strategic province of Marib. 

Clashes between Yemeni government forces and Houthi rebels have intensified in the strategic province of Marib, with military sources saying a senior loyalist commander was among dozens of fighters killed. 

Earlier this month, the Iran-backed Houthis resumed a push to capture Marib city, which lies close to some of Yemen’s richest oil fields in the north of the country. 

Hundreds of fighters from both sides have been killed in fighting since Friday, according to government sources. The Houthis do not usually release casualty tolls.
