A Look At How Russian Foreign Minster Lavrov Was Welcomed In India Versus German Foreign Minister Baerbock

G20 Finance Meeting Ends In Discord As China Refuses To Condemn Ukraine War

VOA: G20 Finance Ministers Fail to Bridge Differences Over Ukraine

The finance ministers of the Group of 20 countries wrapped up a two-day meeting Saturday in India without issuing a joint statement after China and Russia objected to references that other members wanted to make on Moscow’s aggression in Ukraine.

With no consensus, India, which holds the G-20 presidency this year, said in what is called a “chair’s summary” that "most members strongly condemned the war in Ukraine and stressed that it is causing immense human suffering and exacerbating existing fragilities in the global economy."

Stating that it is essential to uphold international law, the summary said that “the use of or threat of use of nuclear weapons is inadmissible. The peaceful resolution of conflicts, efforts to address crises, as well as diplomacy and dialogue are vital. Today’s era must not be of war.”

World Leaders Gather In Bali For G20 Summit

AFP: Biden and Xi centre stage as G20 gathers in Indonesia

Leaders from the world's 20 largest economies arrive on the Indonesian island Bali on Monday for a post-pandemic reunion chilled by Sino-US rivalry and overshadowed by a superpower sit-down between Joe Biden and Xi Jinping.

With people worldwide feeling the bite of stratospheric food and fuel prices, Ukraine mired in conflict and the threat of nuclear war casting a menacing pall, G20 presidents and prime ministers will see what, if anything, they can agree to do about it.

It is the biggest gathering by the group of leaders since the pandemic began.

But this is no fond reunion.

Washington Post: Putin plans to attend G-20 summit despite calls to exclude him

Russian President Vladimir Putin plans to attend the Group of 20 summit that is being hosted by Indonesia this year, Russia's ambassador to the Southeast Asian country said Wednesday.

Western nations are reportedly trying to exclude Moscow from the G-20, a group of the world's largest economies.

"It will depend on many, many things, including the covid situation, that is getting better. So far, his intention is . . . he wants to," Ambassador Lyudmila Vorobieva said of Putin's attendance.

CGTN: Xi Jinping calls for tariff reduction within G20 amid potential virus-driven global recession

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday urged a collective tariff reduction within the Group of 20 (G20) bloc, a strong call to boost confidence and combat a potential virus-driven global recession.

"I want to call on all G20 members to take collective actions – cutting tariffs, removing barriers, and facilitating the unfettered flow of trade," President Xi said during the video conference of the G20 Extraordinary Virtual Leaders' Summit on COVID-19.

"Together, we can send a strong signal and restore confidence for global economic recovery."

The coronavirus outbreak, first reported in central China's Wuhan City last December, has fast spread across the globe within months. Strict control measures including travel restrictions and quarantine rules carried out by various nations have disrupted economic activities and threatened the world's economy.

G20 Ends

USA Today: G-20 leaders end summit by calling for world trade reforms. U.S. remains holdout on Paris climate accord

BUENOS AIRES – President Donald Trump on Saturday signed a joint statement following the Group of 20 summit in which the world's leaders affirmed a commitment to reform global trade but disagreed with the United States on the issue of climate change.

Nineteen of the group's members committed to implementing the Paris climate accord, but the statement noted the United States reiterated its decision to withdraw from the agreement and affirmed "its strong commitment to economic growth."

A senior White House official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the U.S. position on the Paris agreement was well-known and so the document's language should not have come as surprise. Trump withdrew from the Paris agreement last year, honoring a campaign pledge.

G20 Summit Starts With Dissension Among Numerous Leaders

BBC: G20 Buenos Aires: Rifts laid bare as world leaders meet

World leaders have sat down for the opening session of their annual G20 summit, with any number of disputes and disagreements on the table.

Host president, Argentina's Mauricio Macri, said the solution was "dialogue, dialogue and dialogue" and called for a clear message of shared responsibility.

But US President Donald Trump has already cancelled meeting Russia's Vladimir Putin over Ukraine.

And huge differences loom on climate change, trade and the Khashoggi affair.

The G20, made up of 19 of the world's most industrialised nations plus the EU, accounts for 85% of the world's economic output and two-thirds of the world's population.

Arab Refugees In Hamburg View G20 Rioters As Crazy

German riot police officers walk in front of protesters during demonstrations at the G20 summit in Hamburg, Germany, July 8, 2017. REUTERS/Fabian Bimmer

Reuters: Hamburg's G20 rioters are 'crazy' in the eyes of Arab refugees

Arab refugees watching anti-G20 riots in Hamburg from the relative safety of a falafel joint said on Saturday the rioters were insane for destroying their tolerant adoptive city and were astonished by what they saw as the police's restraint.

"If people did this in Egypt they would be shot," said Ibrahim Ali, a 29-year-old Egyptian who came here in 2011. "The state provides everything: housing, unemployment benefits and education. Yet those people are not happy. I don't get it."

Ali and two more refugees from Syria and Egypt were serving beer, falafel, hummus, tabouleh salad and other Middle Eastern delights to protesters who had started leaving the Sternschanze quarter as police special units moved in against the rioters.

"They are crazy. I can't believe my eyes," said Mohammad Halabi, 32, a Syrian who arrived in Germany as a refugee some 18 months ago. "They have such a beautiful country and they're destroying it."

WNU Editor: All immigrants from poor or authoritarian countries feel like this when they see Westerners riot and needlessly destroy other people's property. I had a taste of this a few years ago when I was caught in the middle of a riot in Montreal and I was teargassed. The students were rioting because their university tuition cost was going up from around $3,000/year to about $4,200/year spread out over a few years. Yup .... students rioting because their tuition for an entire year from a world class university was being raised to $4,200/year at some point in the far future .... while elsewhere in the world .... parents who dream of sending their kids to university are facing tuition rates many multiples of that. Are we living in a bizarre world .... you betcha.

Why President Trump Was Sidelined In The G20 Family Photo

Smile: The family photo of G20 leaders is a tradition which sees the longest-serving leaders get closer to the center, with the country hosting the summit having its head of government in the center. That put Trump second from left, beside Emmanuel Macron, the newly-elected French president and Joko Widodo, the president of Indonesia

Daily Mail: New boy Trump is sidelined in G20 family photo - because protocol puts the longest-serving leaders in the middle (but he gets to bond with France's Macron)

* Donald Trump was at the far left of a 'family photo' of G20 leaders in Hamburg, Germany, where they are meeting
* He was put beside French president Emmanuel Macron who was elected after him
* Protocol is that the longer the leaders have served, the closer they get to stand to the leader who is hosting the summit
* Meeting is on series of contentious topics, including climate change and world trade
* Has been marred by violent clashes between anti-capitalist protests and police outside

President Donald Trump found himself a fringe player at the G20 in Hamburg, Germany – at least in the annual 'family photo.'

Protocol for this particular meeting of world leaders dictates that those who have been in office the longest occupy the center positions when they gather to say 'cheese.'

The only exception is the host nation, whose leader – in this case German Chancellor Angela Merkel – gets the prime slot, front-and-center.

Trump, who became president less than seven months ago, was positioned near the end of the first row – with only French prime minister Emmanuel Macron to his outside.

Trump and Macron were seen chatting amiably, with the pair set to meet in Paris for Bastille Day on July 14.

No One Booked A Hotel For President Trump's Stay In Hamburg During The G20 Meeting

BuzzFeed: President Trump Apparently Couldn't Find A Hotel To Book For The G20 Summit

He is one of the most powerful people in the world. He is coming to the meeting of 20 powerful countries. And he has a problem: no hotel room for the G20.

White House officials apparently waited too long to book accommodations for President Trump, leaving him without a hotel in Hamburg, Germany, as world leaders converge for the G20 summit.

Organizers announced the scheduled summit in February 2016, which requires 9,000 hotel rooms to accommodate world leaders, their sizable staffs, and security details.

The Hamburger Abendblatt, a local news outlet, reported that the US government wanted to accommodate Trump in the Four Seasons, but it was already booked. In fact, it turns out that every luxury hotel in Hamburg was reportedly booked by the time the Americans called, leaving Trump, who is associated with an empire of hotel properties, scrambling for a place to stay.

Update: Trump Scrambles for G-20 Hotel (US News and World Report)

WNU Editor: The press is blaming President Trump for this sanfu ..... but my gut is telling me that they are wrong. These reservations are usually done a year in advance. For example .... next year's G20 is in Buenos Aires .... and I am sure most (if not all) of the hotels have already been booked and/or slated for the heads of state who will be visiting. And while I do not know how the U.S. goes about booking their reservations .... and what I am going to say is pure speculation on my part .... but a part of me wonders if officials in the State Department/White House during the Obama administration made the decision to not bother making any reservations for the G20 meeting in Hamburg because they knew that they would not be here at this time .... an oversight not noticed by the incoming Trump administration until U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson himself was stuck with no hotel reservation during the Group of 20 meeting in February at Bonn. I am sure that after that event there was a scramble (and probably an awareness) that it was too late to book anything for Hamburg ... hence the reason why President Trump is staying at Hamburg's Senate guesthouse for the next few days. But like I said .... I am just speculating. :)

Update: On a side note .... a few months ago the GF wanted me to book a villa at a specific resort  in St. Barts for her 50th birthday next year. Went about doing it .... and .... all of them were already BOOKED!!!!! Lesson of the day .... if you want to book something nice .... you have to do it a year plus in advance .... a lesson that I am sure the people in the White House are well aware of tonight.

Massive Protests Break Out In Hamburg A Day Before The G-20 Summit

BBC: G20: Hamburg sees clashes between police and protesters

Seventy-six police officers have been injured in clashes with protesters in Germany's city of Hamburg, where a G20 summit starts shortly.

Three officers were taken to hospital, police said. There were also reports of injuries among protesters.

The clashes began when police charged at masked protesters at a "Welcome to hell" march attended by 12,000 people.

World leaders - including US President Donald Trump - will discuss climate change, trade and other major issues.

Police fired water cannon and pepper spray at masked protesters, who hurled bottles, stones and flares.

G20 Summit Ends With A Vow To Destroy The Islamic State

Reuters: G20 vows joint security steps after Paris attacks; no new strategy on Syria

World leaders vowed tighter border controls, more intelligence sharing and a crackdown on terrorist financing after the Paris attacks, but there was little sign at a summit on Monday of a dramatic shift in strategy against Islamic State in Syria.

U.S. President Barack Obama, speaking at the end of the G20 meetings in Turkey, said the coordinated attacks in the French capital were a setback in the fight against the jihadists, but that putting U.S. troops on the ground in Syria to combat them "would be a mistake."

The attacks across Paris, which killed 129 people at a concert, restaurants and a soccer stadium on Friday, underlined the threat posed by Islamic State (ISIL) far beyond its strongholds in Syria and Iraq. They overshadowed the two-day summit, which took place just 500 km (310 miles) from Syria.

The World Now Sees The U.S. As A Declining Power

Embarrassment In Seoul -- Wall Street Journal editorial

The world won't follow slow-growth, weak-dollar America.

Has there ever been a major economic summit where a U.S. President and his Treasury Secretary were as thoroughly rebuffed as they were at this week's G-20 meeting in Seoul? We can't think of one. President Obama failed to achieve any of his main goals while getting pounded by other world leaders for failing U.S. policies and lagging growth.

The root of this embarrassment is political and intellectual: Rather than leading the world from a position of strength, Mr. Obama and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner came to Seoul blaming the rest of the world for U.S. economic weakness. America's problem, in their view, is the export and exchange rate policies of the Germans, Chinese or Brazilians. And the U.S. solution is to have the Fed print enough money to devalue the dollar so America can grow by stealing demand from the rest of the world.

My Comment: Trillion dollar plus deficits coupled with even more unsustainable programs in the future. The massive growth of government liabilities. An anti-business sentiment and perception that is backed by a pro-union sentiment and government policies. The printing of hundreds of billions of dollars by the Treasury.

Yup .... most powers around the world are now NOT paying attention to a U.S. government that is pursuing policies that many of these same countries pursued in the past, and have now repudiated them as unworkable. Change the government .... and more importantly change the policies .... that is when the world's perception will change. .

G-20 News Roundup -- November 11, 2010

Currencies Set To Dominate G20 Summit Agenda -- BBC

The world's leading economies have begun a summit in South Korea, with currency policies set to dominate the agenda.

There are fears the G20 meeting in Seoul could descend into a row between the US and China about so-called "currency wars" and trade imbalances.

Ahead of the meeting, US President Barack Obama urged leaders to work together for global economic recovery.

He also defended the US's policy of pumping $600bn into the economy.

"In a prudent, stable way, we want to make sure that we are boosting growth rates at home as well as abroad," Mr Obama said of the policy announced last week designed to kick-start the US economy's fragile recovery.
