Asia Times: Patents: China knocks US out of top spot

The Asian powerhouse has become the word leader in international filings

China last year became the world leader in international patent filings, unseating the United States which had held the top spot for more than four decades, the UN said Tuesday.

A record 265,800 international patent applications were filed last year, a hike of 5.2% from 2018, the World Intellectual Property Organisation said in its annual report.

WIPO’s complex system of registering international patents involves multiple categories.

In the main category – the Patent Cooperation Treaty, or PCT – China topped the ranking for the first time, with 58,990 applications.

The U.S. Navy Is Admitting That A Key 'UFO' Patent Is Operable

Warzone/The Drive: Navy's Advanced Aerospace Tech Boss Claims Key 'UFO' Patent Is Operable

Navy officials claim their radical electromagnetic and superconductor technologies aren't theoretical, they’re already operable in some form.

Last month, The War Zone reported on a series of strange patent applications the U.S. Navy has filed over the last few years and questioned what their connections may be with the ongoing saga of Navy personnel reporting incidents involving unidentified objects in or near U.S. airspace.

We have several active Freedom of Information Act requests with the Department of Navy to pursue more information related to the research that led to these patents. As those are being processed, we've continued to dig through the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's (USPTO) Public Patent Application Information Retrieval database to get as much context for these patents as possible.

More Signs That China Is On The Path To Be The World's Dominant Country

DW: China flexes its patent muscle

A Chinese company is the leader in patent applications in Europe. And for the first time, China has received more patent filings than the USA, EU, Japan and South Korea combined. What does this all mean?

China is catching up in technological innovations. The country did well in the European Patent Office's ranking on Wednesday, with Huawei filing more patents in Europe than any other company, and the country as a whole advancing to fifth place for the first time.

When it comes to total patent applications, China has been the world's number one since 2011, since most patents are filed within the country. Given the country's enormous size and population, that might not be that surprising.

WNU Editor: When I was working in China in the 1980s I enjoyed going to their universities. They knew thir stuff (i.e. science, engineering, etc.), but their resources were limited and at that time the students were more focused on protesting against the central government that eventually led to the 1989 Tiannamien massacre. On my last trip a few years ago .... I went to one university near Quanzhou (Fujian Province) that I had visited many times in the 1980s. Words cannot describe how much the place had changed in 25 years. My prediction .... if current trends continue 25 years from now China will easily be the leading nation when it comes to discovering new technologies, developments in science, and yes .... patents .... and we will be the ones who will be stealing/copying from them.

Apple, Qualcomm Tops in Patents? Nope, Try the Navy -- Times of San Diego

The U.S. Navy received patents for more developments last year than most of the Fortune 500 corporations ranked in a recent report.

The Navy increased its patents by 12 percent, having been granted 399 patents while climbing three slots to no. 89 on the IP Record’s Top 300 Organizations Granted U.S. Patents in 2013.

“The Navy has continued to see its patent portfolio strengthen year after year,” said Dr. Walter F. Jones, executive director at the Office of Naval Research, in a news release. “The variety of patents granted is striking, but just as compelling are the partnerships we develop with academia, research institutions and industry to support research that addresses critical Navy needs.”

My Comment: The Navy has a $16 billion research budget .... give me a budget like that and I should be able to find something to patent.
