Turkey's Erdogan Declared Winner Of Presidential Run-Off Election

Reuters: Turkey's Erdogan prevails in election test of his 20-year rule

ANKARA (Reuters) -President Tayyip Erdogan extended his two decades in power in elections on Sunday, winning a mandate to pursue increasingly authoritarian policies which have polarised Turkey and strengthened its position as a regional military power.

His challenger, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, called it "the most unfair election in years" but did not dispute the outcome. Official results showed Kilicdaroglu won 47.9% of the votes to Erdogan's 52.1%, pointing to a deeply divided nation.

The election had been seen as one of the most consequential yet for Turkey, with the opposition believing it had a strong chance of unseating Erdogan and reversing his policies after his popularity was hit by a cost-of-living crisis.

Third-Place Candidate In Turkey's Elections Has Thrown His Support Behind President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Presidential Run-Off

France 24: Turkey’s third-place, far-right candidate endorses Erdogan ahead of runoff

The third-placed contender in the Turkish presidential elections on Monday formally endorsed President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for the second-round runoff vote to be held on May 28th.

The nationalist presidential candidate Sinan Ogan, 55, has emerged as a potential kingmaker after neither Erdogan nor his main challenger, opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu, secured the majority needed for a first-round victory on May 14th.

Ogan, a former academic who was backed by a far-right anti-migrant party, won 5.17% in the May 14 vote and could hold the key to victory in the runoff now that he’s out of the race.

Washington Post: Turkish opposition, trailing Erdogan, faces hard post-election truths

ISTANBUL — Two days had passed since Turkey’s landmark election and Gokce Sari, a 24-year-old supporter of the opposition, was still processing defeat, with her candidate badly trailing President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the first round of voting.

“I’m hopeless. Sometimes I’m angry,” she said. But it was a deeper realization that haunted her, with the results for parliament and president showing that parties that did not reflect her worldview, and voters who did not share her priorities, held more sway than she had imagined.

“I don’t appear to understand my society,” she said. “My hope hindered my understanding of the reality, of how degraded and ignorant our society has become.”

Turkey's Presidential Election To Be Decided In A Runoff

Reuters: Turkey faces election runoff, Erdogan seen with momentum

ANKARA (Reuters) -Tayyip Erdogan led comfortably on Monday after the first round of Turkey's presidential election, with his rival facing an uphill struggle to prevent the president extending his rule into a third decade in a runoff vote on May 28.

Turkish assets weakened on the news, which showed Erdogan just below the 50% threshold needed to avoid sending the NATO-member country to a second round of a presidential election viewed as passing judgment on his autocratic rule.

Erdogan's People's Alliance, comprising his Islamist-rooted AK Party and its nationalist partners, also appeared set to win a majority in the new parliament with 321 of the 600 seats, further boosting his chances in the presidential runoff.

Turkey Presidential Runoff Vote Likely

FOX News: Turkey election: Count shows President Erdogan under threshold needed to avoid runoff

Erdogan has governed Turkey as either prime minister or president for two decades

Early results for the closely watched presidential election in Turkey show that support for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan dipped below the majority required to win, signaling a likely runoff later this month.

With more than 90% of ballot boxes counted Sunday, Erdogan had just under 50% of the vote, according to the state-run Anadolu Agency.

His main challenger, opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu, had 44.4% as the gap between the two shrank.

Is Turkey About To Elect A New President?

FILE PHOTO: Kemal Kilicdaroglu, presidential candidate of main opposition alliance, holds an election rally in Izmir

Reuters: Turkey's Kilicdaroglu exits Erdogan's shadow in election race

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Stuck in Tayyip Erdogan's shadow throughout his career, opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu believes his time has come to set Turkey on a new path and roll back much of the legacy of the man who has dominated politics for two decades.

An alliance of six opposition parties named the earnest and sometimes feisty former civil servant as its candidate to take on Erdogan in the May 14 elections, which are seen as perhaps the most consequential in the country's modern history.

Opinion polls generally show Kilicdaroglu, 74, holding an edge, and possibly winning in a second round vote, after an inclusive campaign promising solutions to a cost-of-living crisis that eroded the president's popularity in recent years.

Turkish President Erdogan Cancels Campaign Citing Illness

Bloomberg: Turkey’s Erdogan Cancels Campaign Trips After Off-Camera Illness

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan canceled three scheduled campaign appearances less than a month before high-stakes elections after falling ill during a live television interview.

Broadcasting was disrupted for several minutes on Tuesday evening after Erdogan, 69, became sick with what he said was stomach flu.

In power for the past two decades, Erdogan has developed a reputation as a tireless strongman who rarely cancels events, so the sudden and public nature of the incident initially shocked viewers.

But his aides have since said the president was in good health and would resume his regular schedule after taking a day’s rest.

Turkey Says It Has Discovered Natural Gas Fields Worth $500 Billion

OilPrice.com: Turkey Says Its Black Sea Natural Gas Discoveries Are Worth Over $500 Billion

The volumes of natural gas that Turkey has found so far in the Black Sea are worth in excess of $500 billion, Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Fatih Dönmez told broadcaster CNN Türk.

The huge gas finds would be enough to supply all households in the country for 35 years, or to cover total Turkish natural gas consumption, including from industry, for 15 to 20 years, the minister added.

Last week, Turkish Petroleum (TPAO) said on Twitter that the installation of the pipes connecting the energy base in the Black Sea to the Sakarya Gas Field Land Facility had been successfully completed. The company said the inauguration of the start of the gas transmission from the field is expected to take place on April 20 in the presence of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Turkey Will Support China's Peace Plan For Ukraine If It Creates A "Foundation For Negotiations"

Turkey will support China's peace plan for Ukraine if Beijing established a "foundation for negotiations," Erdogan's representative, Ibrahim Kalin, in an interview with the Turkish NTV channel.

West ignored the Chinese 12-point peace plan in order "not to give credit of confidence to Beijing," he noted, adding that anti-Russian sanctions were also "poorly calculated" and only pushed China and Russia to strengthen ties.

Turkey's Opposition Parties Unite Behind A Common Candidate To Take On Erdogan

Politico.eu: Turkish opposition unites behind Kılıçdaroğlu as anti-Erdoğan candidate

Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu was favored over popular favorite and mayor of Istanbul Ekrem Imamoğlu, who is entangled in a legal battle.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan now knows who he will face this May, in the most hotly contested elections in his 20-year rule: Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu.

After weeks of fierce negotiations that saw the opposition alliance, consisting of parties across the political spectrum from left to right, come close to falling apart, the so-called “Table of Six” coalition officially picked Kılıçdaroğlu as their joint candidate on Monday.

The main opposition leader made an announcement after the six parties’ representatives met in Ankara, saying that the people’s coalition would “run the country in consultation and agreement with one another.”

Two Massive Earthquakes Rock Turkey And Syria As Death Toll Now Exceeds 2,300

Tremors from the first deadly quake - which lasted about a minute - were felt as far away as the island of Cyprus, Egypt and Lebanon, and a tsunami warning was briefly issued by authorities in Italy along the country's coast. The second quake struck about 60 miles from the epicentre of the first, less than 12 hours later

Thousands are feared dead after Turkey was hit by a second massive earthquake, just hours after an earlier catastrophic quake killed more than 1,900 people and plunged the region into an unfolding humanitarian crisis.

The initial 7.8-magnitude night-time tremor, followed hours later by a slightly smaller one, wiped out entire sections of major Turkish cities in a region filled with millions of people who have fled the civil war in Syria and other conflicts.

The later 7.5 magnitude quake struck at 1.24pm (1024 GMT) two-and-a-half miles southeast of the town of Ekinozu and around 60 miles north of the first quake that has wrought devastation across Turkey and Syria.

ISTANBUL (Reuters) -Thousands of people rallied in Turkey on Thursday to oppose the conviction and political ban of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, chanting slogans criticising President Tayyip Erdogan and his ruling AK Party before elections next year.

A Turkish court on Wednesday sentenced Imamoglu, a popular rival to Erdogan, to two years and seven months in prison, which like the ban must be confirmed by an appeals court.

The verdict drew wide criticism at home and abroad as an abuse of democracy.

Late on Thursday, media reports said the prosecutor in the case had launched a legal challenge to the verdict, seeking a longer jail sentence for Imamoglu. No further details were immediately available.

Turkey On the Pathway To Destroy The Value In Its Currency

Bloomberg: Turkey Shocks With Another Rate Cut Despite Raging Inflation

(Bloomberg) -- Turkey’s central bank delivered another shock cut to interest rates, despite inflation running at a 24-year high and with the lira trading at a record low.

The Monetary Policy Committee led by Governor Sahap Kavcioglu lowered the benchmark to 12% from 13% on Thursday, surprising most economists surveyed by Bloomberg.

The lira extended declines after the announcement and was trading 0.2% weaker against the dollar as of 3:02 p.m. in Istanbul.

Turkey is charting an economic strategy in defiance of mainstream monetary policy. It’s already been an outlier for much of this year, as the world’s central bankers unleashed the most aggressive tightening in decades, and stood out even more this week as countries like Indonesia and Brazil raised rates.

Turkish President Erdogan Warns Greece Not To 'Go Too Far'

Anadolu Agency: 'If you go too far, price will be heavy,' Turkish president warns Greece

Athens' occupation of Aegean islands 'not our concern,' President Erdogan says, adding: 'When time comes, we will do what's necessary. As we say, all of a sudden, we can come overnight'

Amid tensions between Türkiye and Greece, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged Athens on Saturday to look at history, saying: "If you go too far, the price will be heavy."

"Greece, look at history, go back in time; if you go too far, the price will be heavy. We have one thing to say to Greece: Remember Izmir," Erdogan said at Türkiye's largest technology event, Teknofest, in the province of Samsun on the Black Sea coast.

Izmir is a province on Türkiye's western Aegean Sea coast that Ankara liberated from Greek occupation in 1922 as part of its War of Independence. Erdogan warned Greece, saying that Athens' "occupation" of Aegean Sea islands "is not our concern."
