Exclusive: polling carried out for ‘The Independent’ shows that 55 per cent of UK voters intend to vote for Britain to leave the EU in the 23 June referendum

The campaign to take Britain out of the EU has opened up a remarkable 10-point lead over the Remain camp, according to an exclusive poll for The Independent.

The survey of 2,000 people by ORB found that 55 per cent believe the UK should leave the EU (up four points since our last poll in April), while 45 per cent want it to remain (down four points). These figures are weighted to take account of people’s likelihood to vote. It is by far the biggest lead the Leave camp has enjoyed since ORB began polling the EU issue for The Independent a year ago, when it was Remain who enjoyed a 10-point lead. Now the tables have turned.

Even when the findings are not weighted for turnout, Leave is on 53 per cent (up three points since April) and Remain on 47 per cent (down three). The online poll, taken on Wednesday and Thursday, suggests the Out camp has achieved momentum at the critical time ahead of the 23 June referendum.

LONDON — Approval of the European Union has fallen sharply across the continent, according to new research, raising fears in Brussels of a contagion effect from the upcoming British referendum on its membership in the bloc.

The Washington-based Pew Research Center interviewed 10,000 people across Europe. Their answers showed that skepticism about the EU was not confined to Britain.

France viewed the bloc even more unfavorably than its neighbor across the English Channel, with just 38 percent of people having a positive opinion of the EU, compared with 69 percent in 2004. In Spain, approval of the EU has fallen from 80 percent to 47 percent.

Reuters: Britain's EU Out campaign takes 4-5 percentage point lead: YouGov and ICM polls

The campaign for Britain to leave the European Union has taken a 4-5 percentage point lead ahead of a June 23 referendum, according to online polls by ICM and YouGov, sending sterling toward three-week lows against the U.S. dollar.

The swing toward "Out" with less than three weeks to go comes as both sides step up their campaigning to try to win over the large number of still undecided voters with warnings over the economy and immigration.

The ICM poll of 1,741 people taken June 3-5 showed 48 percent would vote to leave, up from 47 percent a week earlier, while 43 percent would opt to stay, down 1 percentage point from a week earlier.

The YouGov poll of 3,495 people on June 1-3 showed 45 percent would opt to leave the EU, up from 40 percent in a comparable poll a month earlier, while 41 percent would opt to stay, down from 42 percent.

Reuters: Obama arrives in London on mission to persuade UK voters to stay in EU

U.S. President Barack Obama arrived in London on Thursday with a mission - to persuade British voters not to ditch membership of the European Union in a referendum that Washington fears could weaken the West.

His visit is a welcome one for Prime Minister David Cameron, leading the "In" campaign, but has drawn scorn from those arguing that Britain should leave the EU.

Obama is likely to suggest Britons should vote to stay in the bloc to preserve Britain's wealth, its "special relationship" with the United States and the cohesion of the West.

"As the president has said, we support a strong United Kingdom in the European Union," Ben Rhodes, Obama's deputy national security adviser, told reporters in Washington before the trip.

After a visit to Saudi Arabia, including talks with King Salman, Obama arrived in London on Thursday.

It's OK To Spy On Our EU Neighbours, Claims Ex-Head Of MI6 -- The Daily Mail

Britain should not be 'squeamish' about using espionage to protect its financial security, claims a former spy chief.

Sir Richard Dearlove, ex-chief of MI6, said possible harm to Britain's economy caused by the eurozone crisis should be investigated.

He told the Global Strategy Forum in London that while bankers should be able to handle economic turbulence they 'might need help from time to time' on such matters.
