Secretary of State for Defence Grant Shapps warns the foundations of the world order are being 'shaken to their core' by the actions of hostile states such as Russia, China and Iran
The foundations of the world order are being 'shaken to their core' by the actions of hostile states such as Russia, China and Iran, Grant Shapps will warn today.
The Defence Secretary will issue the chilling assessment as he reveals 20,000 British personnel are to join a Nato exercise to prepare for a potential invasion of Europe by Russia.
In a speech in London, he will say: 'We are in a new era and we must be prepared to deter our enemies, prepared to lead our allies and prepared to defend our nation whenever the call comes.
Nigel Farage has said he may be forced to leave Britain after his bank closed his accounts and others refused his custom.
The former UKIP leader said his personal and business accounts with a major retail bank have been closed because of a “commercial decision” and other high street firms have refused to allow him to transfer his funds to them.
Mr Farage told The Telegraph he may have been the victim of “blatant corporate prejudice” because of his campaigning for Brexit, or fallen foul of “politically exposed person” rules designed to lower banks’ exposure to bribery and money-laundering.
WNU Editor: There is zero evidence that he has done anything illegal. This is political, with the UK banking system clearly colluding to ban citizens that they disagree with politically.
And it gets worse. There is no outcry over this ban, and little if any media coverage.
A friend of mine in the UK is telling me that the British establishment is driving out anyone that they disagree with, and closing their access to a bank account is one of the tools that they are using.
The Duran has a good analysis on why this is happening (see video below).
UK Brexit Leader Nigel Farage Says His Bank Accounts Have Been Closed
A test of the UK's "national warning message" system will be conducted in the next few weeks.
A “national warning message” will be sent directly to every mobile phone across Britain later this month or in early March.
Before the alert is sent a publicity campaign will warn people to expect it and not to panic when they get it.
Officials say the test may be the only time a nationwide message is sent but it will demonstrate that the new system is capable of reaching every part of the country.
Downing Street says reports of raucous behaviour of all-party trips are a matter for parliament
No 10 has said it is “very concerning” that MPs were reportedly met by sex workers in their hotel rooms and engaged in raucous drinking while on parliamentary trips abroad.
The prime minister’s deputy official spokesperson said the oversight of trips taken by all-party parliamentary groups (APPGs) was a matter for parliament but expressed concern about some of the behaviour reported by Politico and the Times.
“We have seen some of the reports and some of the behaviour reported is clearly very concerning,” he said.
* Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has reportedly ordered an audit into the Ukraine war
* It will review the costs and benefits of Britain arming Ukraine in the invasion
* The UK has been one of the biggest military suppliers to the country this year
Rishi Sunak has reportedly asked for a 'Goldman Sachs-style' audit of progress in the war in Ukraine, sparking fears he is moving towards a more cautious approach to Vladimir Putin's invasion.
Senior government figures are said be concerned the Prime Minister could change the UK's stance on the conflict as it enters a crucial phase.
A source in Whitehall compared the move to a 'Goldman Sachs dashboard' review of the invasion and Britain's supply lines to Ukraine.
WNU Editor: This is not a real audit. This is a normal British government mandated report and review on the actual military realities in the Russia - Ukraine war. I do not expect this report will ever be made public. I also expect zero change in policy when this report is finalized.
But what is interesting about this story is how the British media has responded to this leak.
A leak (according to the BBC) from Whitehall. You would think that a thorough examination by the government on the progress of the war would be overwhelmingly supported by the media. Instead, it seems the British media are not only critical that this report is being done (parroting what the Whitehall leaker has said), but they are also deeply concerned that this report may result in a lessening of support for Ukraine.
When did Whitehall (i.e. the bureaucracy) decide what UK policy was to be? It looks like the UK has its own "deep state".
Supermarkets are rationing sales as poultry industry grapples with spiraling costs and bird flu
Egg shortages and rationing in the UK are expected to last beyond Christmas, an industry body has warned, as the poultry industry grapples with spiraling costs and its worst ever bout of bird flu.
Lidl is limiting customers to three boxes of eggs each, while Asda is restricting purchases to two boxes per shopper.
Tesco is also considering rationing eggs, after bird flu resulted in shortages on some supermarket shelves. Other supermarkets are sourcing eggs abroad, including Italy.
WNU Editor: I know avian flu is having a role. But the price of energy is not helping.
The place where I buy organic eggs told me that for him and the producer to make money on this product, the cost has to be $1/egg!!!!!! The number one reason being the price of energy/fuel.
Appearing on Sky News, Chancellor Rishi Sunak is asked about the fact that Akshata Murthy has shares in IT company Infosys, which has an office in the Russian capital, Moscow.
Rishi Sunak has been challenged over his wife's links to a company that has a presence in Russia.
Appearing on Sky News, the chancellor was asked about the fact that Akshata Murthy has shares in IT company Infosys.
The firm, which has an office in Moscow, was founded by her father, Indian billionaire N.R. Narayana Murthy.
WNU Editor: The optics for Prime Minister Sunak in this interview are terrible.
He may not have any investments in IT company Infosys, which has an office in Moscow. But his wife and her family does. And Infosys is benefiting from its presence in Russia, since much of their competition has left because of sanctions.
An exclusive poll for Sky News found that 32% would oppose sanctions if they caused energy bills to rise further.
Public support for sanctions on Russia remains overwhelming, but could erode if the cost-of-living crisis worsens, an exclusive poll for Sky News has found.
The poll by Ipsos suggests that 70% of the public support implementing sanctions on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.
* Rishi Sunak has met King Charles at Buckingham Palace and been made new PM, taking over from Liz Truss
* Ms Truss held a last Cabinet meeting before drawing a line under her disastrous tenure in Downing Street
* Mr Sunak assembling a Cabinet while facing in-tray that includes soaring inflation and hole in public finances
* Jeremy Hunt set to stay as Chancellor, while Dominic Raab and Michael Gove could make return to frontline
* But Defence Secretary Ben Wallace at risk as Mr Sunak resists pledge to raise military spending to 3% of GDP
Rishi Sunak plunged the knife in on Liz Truss today pledging to 'fix' her 'mistakes' and win back the public's 'trust' after taking over as Britain's 57th PM.
The incoming premier addressed the nation from Downing Street after being asked to form a government by King Charles in the traditional 'kissing hands' ceremony at Buckginham Palace.
In a sombre speech, he warned of 'difficult' decisions to deal with the 'profound economic crisis' facing the country, saying he 'understood' that Britons were suffering. Rebutting jibes that he is too wealthy to identify with the struggles of ordinary people, he said: 'I fully understand how hard things are.'
* Rishi Sunak is on the brink of becoming the UK's next PM after a breathless few days of Tory manoeuvring
* Boris Johnson pulled out of race last night despite claiming he had 100 nominations from MPs needed to run
* Penny Mordaunt was the only other remaining hopeful but Commons Leader failed to make the 100 threshold
* He could take over from Liz Truss in Downing Street as early as tonight or tomorrow with huge task ahead
Rishi Sunak dramatically seized the keys to Downing Street today after Penny Mordaunt followed Boris Johnson in dropping out of the leadership race.
Mr Sunak has been named the new Tory chief - and the incoming PM - after his sole remaining rival Ms Mordaunt failed to make the threshold of 100 nominations needed to trigger a run-off.
To banging of desks in a room deep in the Commons, 1922 committee chair Sir Graham Brady said he had received one valid form. 'Rishi Sunak is therefore elected as leader of the Conservative Party.'
* Boris Johnson was publicly-backed by 57 MPs, but tonight claimed that he had reached 102 nominations
* He said he is 'well placed to deliver Conservative victory in 2024', but return 'simply not the right thing to do'
* Rishi Sunak, who launched his campaign today, is understood to have been publicly backed by 147 MPs
* He is expected to become new Prime Minister as Penny Mordaunt understood to be short of 100 supporters
* It comes after the former PM unsuccessfully reached out to his two main rivals in an attempt to make a pact
Boris Johnson has sensationally quit the Tory leadership contest citing the need to 'unite' the party, despite claiming he reached the 'very high hurdle of 102 nominations' - as Rishi Sunak could be crowned Prime Minister tomorrow with rival Penny Mordaunt short of the 100 backers threshold.
The former PM tonight said continuing his bid to return to No10 was 'simply not the right thing to do' after unsuccessfully reaching out to his two main rivals in an attempt to make a pact.
But both Mr Sunak and Ms Mordaunt turned down an alliance, with Penny insisting 'I'm in it to win it'.
Liz Truss announced she would resign as British prime minister, brought down just six weeks into the job. She is the shortest serving prime minister in British history https://t.co/FkfKnIhnQSpic.twitter.com/pcuaeeW2ER
* Liz Truss has dramatically resigned as PM after a flood of no-confidence calls from Conservative MPs
* Just 44 days after taking the keys to No10 Ms Truss declared that a replacement will be chosen within a week
* Mini-Budget fallout caused chaos and the situation has spiralled out of control over the past few days
* Utter chaos was seen in the House of Commons division lobbies last night as Tories rowed over crunch vote
* Suella Braverman quit as Home Secretary admitting protocol breach by sending email on immigration policy
* Ms Truss has told the Commons yesterday: 'I am a fighter not a quitter' as she faced Starmer in a fierce PMQs
Liz Truss dramatically quit today, admitting defeat following crisis talks with Tory chiefs in Downing Street and with MPs in open insurrection.
After just 44 disastrous days in No10, the PM took to a lectern outside the famous black door to confirm her departure, sealing her fate as the shortest-serving premier in modern political history.
Revealing she had informed the King of her decision, she said: 'I cannot deliver on the mandate.... I will remain as PM until a successor has been chosen.'
* Suella Braverman quit as Home Secretary admitting protocol breach by sending email on immigration policy
* Delivered vicious parting shot at Liz Truss for breaking promises saying people should resign for 'mistakes'
* Liz Truss has faced a brutal PMQs showdown with Keir Starmer and her own rebellious Conservative MPs
* Government under threat from revolt on fracking in crunch vote despite declaring it a 'confidence' issue
* Inflation rose to 10.1 per cent in September from 9.9 per cent in August reaching the highest level for 40 years
Liz Truss's government and the Conservative Party itself is in the grip of a massive meltdown tonight after Suella Braverman quit as home secretary and a vote on fracking descended into acrimony and accusations of abuse and bullying.
In yet another day of madness in Westminster Ms Braverman was removed ostensibly for breaching protocol by sending an email from her personal account to a contact revealing details of an announcement on immigration policy.
But in another hammer blow for the PM's chances of clinging on, she also complained that the government was breaking promises on migration. She swiped that when people made 'mistakes' - something Ms Truss has admitted - the right thing to do was quit.
WNU Editor: The calls for Prime Minister Liz Truss to resign continue to grow among conservative party members. I am still sticking to my prediction from last week that Liz Truss' days as Prime Minister will soon come to an end.
U.K. Government In Chaos. Fractures and Resignations Rock The Conservative Party
The majority of Conservative Party members want Liz Truss to resign now - just six weeks after voting her in - and their preferred replacement is Boris Johnson, a new poll has found.
A YouGov poll of Tory members found 55% would now vote for Rishi Sunak, who lost out to Ms Truss, if they were able to vote again, while just 25% would vote for Ms Truss.
As her position as prime minister hangs by a thread following a major U-turn on the majority of the mini-budget, Tory members are largely unimpressed with Ms Truss.
* Prime Minister Liz Truss is under enormous pressure after her economic plan was almost entirely scrapped
* New Chancellor Jeremy Hunt threw out 'almost all' of the tax cuts included in her disastrous mini-budget
* Sunak has denied maneuvering to oust Ms Truss as Prime Minister but a senior source said 'he still wants it'
Liz Truss was last night warned she was 'in office but not in power' amid reports Rishi Sunak met with a senior Penny Mordaunt ally.
Mr Sunak, who came second to Ms Truss in the Conservative leadership contest this summer, is said to have spoken to a key Mordaunt backer with a 'tacit' suggestion he could serve as her Chancellor - claims that were denied by Mr Sunak.
Suggestions of Rishi Sunak manouvering to oust Liz Truss as Prime Minister after less than 50 days of her in Downing Street have been denied by the former Chancellor's team.
WNU Editor: It is obvious that some members of her party are plotting to oust her. But do they have enough support to tell her to leave? The next week is going to be crucial for her survival.
UK Prime Minister Liz Truss Says She Is Sorry For 'Mistakes'
* Truss scrapped the pledge to reverse predecessor Boris Johnson’s hike of corporation tax from 19% to 25%, a decision estimated to restore around £18 billion ($20.1 billion) to the U.K. Treasury’s coffers by 2026.
* Finance Minister Kwasi Kwarteng was fired earlier on Friday after less than six weeks in the job, amid mounting political pressure and market chaos.
* Jeremy Hunt — a former health secretary and foreign secretary — was announced as Kwarteng’s successor.
* Chris Philp, chief secretary to the Treasury, was also replaced by Edward Argar.
LONDON — British Prime Minister Liz Truss on Friday scrapped another key tax-cutting policy after firing her finance minister, in a bid to placate markets after the government’s controversial “mini-budget.”
“It is clear that parts of our mini-budget went further and faster than markets were expecting,” Truss said in a brief press conference.
Truss scrapped the pledge to reverse predecessor Boris Johnson’s hike of corporation tax from 19% to 25%, a decision estimated to restore around £18 billion ($20.1 billion) to the U.K. Treasury’s coffers by 2026.
IMHO Liz Truss' days of being PM are numbered. I will not be surprised if she asked by senior Conservative members next week to resign.
As to who will replace her?
My money is on Rishi Sunak (link here).
His image of being Britain's "Obama" will probably appeal to enough members in his party to support him as the next UK leader, as well as his globalist ties.
As to the bigger question .... will Rishi Sunak be a good leader?
I have my doubts. The decision to wage economic war against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine has devastated European economies, and in turn a number of EU governments have been defeated in recent elections.
Rishi Sunak does not strike me as someone who has the understanding that the EU must reverse its Russia strategy, nor the leadership qualities to make the case on why this must be done.
Another prediction. The Labor Party is well positioned to win the next election.
Update #3: Wow!!! I am not the only one who is making the prediction that Liz Truss will not be the Prime Minister in a few weeks, nor on who will replace her (see videos below).
* Chancellor given his marching orders after being hauled back to Downing Street early from a US summit
* PM due to front a 2.30pm press conference in which she is expected to announce corporation tax increase
* Mr Kwarteng's departure makes him the second shortest-serving chancellor in modern British politics
Kwasi Kwarteng was dramatically sacked by Liz Truss today with Jeremy Hunt expected to take the key job as she prepares to make a monster U-turn on the disastrous mini-Budget in a bid to save her premiership.
The Chancellor was given his marching orders after being hauled back to Downing Street from a US summit, with the PM facing a potentially terminal Tory rebellion.
Former foreign secretary and leadership hopeful Jeremy Hunt is making a shock return as a 'safe pair of hands' to take over No11.
Britain braces for potential energy blackouts this winter amid supply disruptions due to the war in Ukraine
The U.K. national power operator has warned that citizens should brace for up to three-hour power blackouts this winter in the "unlikely" event that gas supplies fall short.
The National Grid's Electricity System Operator (ESO) announced Thursday that it has taken steps to establish precautionary measures to ensure gas supplies from October 31 to March 31, 2023.
"Russia’s invasion of Ukraine means that overall, this is likely to be a challenging winter for energy supply throughout Europe," the national operator said in a statement that highlighted multiple scenarios where Brits could find their power shut off during peak use.
