Russia Stages Massive 'Victory Day' Parade Amid Pandemic

Daily Mail: Tanks and troops parade through Red Square as Putin whips up patriotic fervour ahead of a vote on extending his rule

* President Vladimir Putin is today overseeing grand World War II Victory Day celebrations in Red Square
* The Kremlin was forced to reschedule the 75th anniversary May 9 ceremony due to the coronavirus pandemic
* The bombastic display of troops, tanks and missiles comes ahead of July 1 plebiscite on constitutional reforms
* Despite falling rates of new infections, critics have lashed the Russian president for proceeding with event

Columns of tanks and troops are parading through Red Square today as President Vladimir Putin oversees grand World War II commemorations to stir up patriotic fervour ahead of a vote on extending his rule.

Forced to postpone the country's traditional May 9 Victory Day celebrations by the coronavirus pandemic, Putin rescheduled the parade for just a week ahead of a July 1 public vote on controversial constitutional reforms.

Among other changes, the reforms Putin proposed earlier this year would reset the presidential term-limit clock to zero, allowing him to potentially stay in the Kremlin until 2036.

He announced the new dates for the parade and the vote - initially planned for April - last month despite Russia still recording thousands of new coronavirus cases every day.

The rate of new infections has fallen in recent weeks and cities including Moscow have lifted lockdowns, but Russia still has the third highest coronavirus caseload in the world and critics say Putin is rushing ahead for his own political ends.

RT: Russian cities cancel victory parades EN MASSE as fear of Covid-19 still looms, Kremlin says it understands

More Russian cities have canceled their second attempt at a World War II victory parade due to fears around Covid-19. At least ten have stopped or postponed planning so far, but Moscow's showpiece ceremony will still go ahead.

The events normally take place annually on May 9, with the capital city hosting the main spectacle, which is broadcast around the world. Most towns also have smaller parties. This year's celebrations, which will mark the 75th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazism, were postponed due to Covid-19 and moved to June 24.

RFE: U.S. Defense Secretary Esper Invited To Moscow Military Parade

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has invited U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper to a military parade in Moscow later this month, the Defense Ministry says.

The Russian ministry said Shoigu made the invitation during a telephone conversation on June 2, without saying whether Esper had accepted it.

The June 24 parade on Moscow’s Red Square is to mark the 75th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II. Russia traditionally holds the parade on May 9, but the grand celebration was postponed over the coronavirus pandemic that is still triggering thousands of new infections each day.

Relations between Washington and Moscow remain strained over a range of issues including the conflicts in Syria and Ukraine.

© RIA Novosti

RT: The peak of the spread of Covid-19 in Russia has passed. Postponed Victory Day parade will be held on June 24 – Putin

President Vladimir Putin has announced that Russia’s postponed Victory Day parade will take place on June 24. First planned for May 9, the 75th-anniversary celebration of Soviet victory over Nazism was canceled due to Covid-19.

According to the president, the peak of the spread of coronavirus in Russia has passed, and it is now possible to plan a victory parade.

“I order you to begin preparations for the military parade in honor of the 75th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War in the capital of Russia, Moscow, and in other cities,” he told Russia’s Minister of Defence Sergey Shoigu.

June 24 will be the 75th anniversary of the first-ever victory parade, which took place on Red Square in 1945.

“We will do this on June 24, the day when the legendary, historical parade of the winners took place,” the President said.

Russia Marks 75th Anniversary Of The Defeat Of Nazi Germany With Spectacular Fireworks Display Over Moscow

Daily Mail: Russia marks 75th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany with spectacular fireworks display over Moscow as Ukraine holds Victory Day celebrations in Kiev amid coronavirus lockdown

* Moscow's skyline lit up with a spectacular fireworks display tonight after Red Square march were called off
* Elsewhere in eastern Europe, Victory Day celebrations were largely curbed due to the coronavirus pandemic
* Hundreds of Belarusians, including veterans, however, attended a parade in Minsk for the 75th anniversary

Unable to put on a show of military might today due to surging coronavirus infections, Russia indulged in a series of spectacular fireworks displays over the capital as night fell.

Celebrations in the former Soviet Union were expected to be grand this year owing to it being the 75th anniversary of Nazi Germany in Europe, but coronavirus concerns scaled back the festivities.

Moscow called off its Victory Day after Russia became the fifth hardest-hit country with nearly 200,000 confirmed infections and a rapidly rising caseload - more than 10,000 confirmed each day this week.

Elsewhere in the former bloc, Ukraine also scaled back its Victory Day - with workers deployed to disinfect the quiet war memorials where veterans clad in face masks laid wreaths to honour the men they fought with.

Belarus Stages 'Victory Day' Parade Despite The Coronavirus Pandemic

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko pictured attending the country's Victory Day parade, which marks the 75th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany in the Second World War, amid the coronavirus outbreak in Minsk, Belarus

Daily Mail: Belarus ‘bribes people’ to attend Victory Day parade to upstage Putin's Russia as 5,000 troops march in country where president Lukashenko claims coronavirus is mass 'psychosis' that can be cured by vodka and saunas

* Hundreds of Belarusians, including veterans, attended a Victory Day parade in Minsk for the 75th anniversary
* Many did not wear masks despite the growing outbreak, with surges after mass events such as Easter services
* It has been suggested students are being offered $4 towards fees if they attend event, according to reports
* President Alexander Lukashenko has rejected lockdown, earlier claiming coronavirus is a 'mass psychosis'
* Meanwhile, with Russia's infections rising, Putin last month postponed a Victory Day parade on Red Square

Belarus has 'bribed people' to attend the Victory Day parade to upstage Vladimir Putin's Russia as 5,000 troops march in the country where President Alexander Lukashenko claims coronavirus is a mass 'psychosis' that can be cured by vodka and saunas.

Hundreds of Belarusians, including Second World War veterans, attended a church ceremony in Minsk that marked the 75th anniversary of the allied victory over Nazi Germany.

Many chose not to wear face masks, despite the growing coronavirus outbreak in the country. The 9.5-million ex-Soviet nation has reported more than 20,000 confirmed cases, with surges after mass public events, such as Easter services.

It has been suggested students at universities are being sent texts offering $4 towards their fees next month if they attend, despite being told that their presence is voluntary, according to a BBC report.

Meanwhile, Putin has led low-key memorials to mark the 75th anniversary of Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in the Second World War on Saturday, as the coronavirus outbreak has forced the nation to scale back celebrations seen as boosting support for the Kremlin.

WNU Editor: My friends in Minsk told me that the parade went ahead, but attendance was a fraction of what it has been in the past. No one is buying Belarusian President Lukashenk's line that covid-19 is a mass "psychosis".

Russian President Putin Leads Scaled-Back Events To Mark 75th Anniversary Of Victory Day

Euronews: Russia celebrates Victory Day as lockdown leaves Moscow deserted

Russia's capital resembled a ghost town on this Victory Day, with traditional military parades and lavish celebrations cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic - following yesterday's similarly downscaled celebrations held in Europe yesterday.

Last year an estimated half-million people came out in Moscow on Thursday to mark the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II.

Due to the lockdown enforced in the city, previously bustling and traffic-clogged streets were eerily empty with only the occasional car or passerby to be seen.

Moscow Times/AFP: Russian Veterans Urge Putin to Postpone WWII Parade Over Virus

Russian veterans on Wednesday urged President Vladimir Putin to postpone a military parade to mark the 75th anniversary of Soviet victory in World War II, due to the coronavirus risk to participants.

Russia has so far not dropped plans to hold a massive parade with thousands of troops marching through Red Square on May 9, despite a national lockdown over the coronavirus pandemic and a ban on large public events.

Before the pandemic, world leaders including France's Emmanuel Macron were expected to attend the parade that was set to last an hour and a half and include 15,000 troops and the latest missile systems.

Previous Post: Will Russia Cancel It's Massive Victory Day Parade And Celebrations On May 9? (April 6, 2020).

WNU Editor: What a difference a few weeks make. Last month I was on a Moscow radio program with a few others where I pushed for a postponement of this year's 75th anniversary of the Victory Parade. Living in Canada I knew first hand what this pandemic was doing, how dangerous it is, and why celebrations like a massive parade or sporting events should be postponed. Needless to say, the host and the guests of this program, followed by the callers, chewed me up. This morning I was back on this program, with the same guests, and a humbled host who admitted that I was right. But I take no joy in this. The pandemic has now engulfed Russia, and the cases, deaths, and economic impact is growing. And as for this year's Victory Day parade and celebrations. Much to my relief, I was told that it is going to be delayed to a later date.

Kremlin Says Victory Day Parade in Moscow May Not Take Place On May 9

If the number of confirmed coronavirus cases continues to rise — prompting Moscow authorities to impose additional restrictions — the parade could be held without spectators. Andrei Nikerichev / Moskva News Agency

Sputnik: Kremlin Says Victory Day Parade in Moscow Surely to Take Place, Perhaps Not on 9 May

PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKIY, Russia (Sputnik) - Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Saturday that the Victory Day parade in Moscow would take place for sure, however, there was a possibility of postponing it from 9 May to another date due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"No one should have any doubt that there would be the Victory Day parade and the celebrations. I don’t know whether it will be on 9 May or later, but it will take place for sure," Peskov said in a televised interview.

According to the Kremlin spokesman, no decision to cancel the parade has been made by Russian President Vladimir Putin yet.

"So far, as of today, no decisions have been made to postpone the festivities, to postpone the Victory Day parade, or to postpone the Immortal Regiment [commemorative procession]. They [the decisions] will be made later, taking into consideration the development of the situation. Various options are being considered, which is understandable," Peskov said.

WNU Editor: No definite decision has been made yet, but I hope they do postpone it to a later date. The pandemic will be at its peak in Russia by May 9th, and I shudder on the number of people who will be exposed to this virus if they permit this parade and celebration to go through.

Russia Pledges To Go Ahead With Massive WWII Victory Day Parade On May 9

Business Insider: Russia has pledged to go ahead with a massive WWII memorial parade — which attracts crowds of more than 100,000 — despite its growing coronavirus outbreak

* Russia is to go ahead with its annual memorial military parade on May 9, despite the coronavirus outbreak.
* The event will see thousands of servicemen and women march together alongside tanks through Moscow to mark 75 years since the end of World War II.
* The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced it had halted rehearsals but that the the main event will still happen. As many as 100,000 spectators attend the parade.
* Russia has reported 6,343 infections and 47 deaths as of Monday.
* Visit Business Insider’s homepage for more stories.

Despite steadily mounting infections from the coronavirus in Russia, President Vladimir Putin has so far refused to cancel a massive parade celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Soviet triumph Nazi Germany.

The annual Victory Day parade on May 9 typically includes tens of thousands of troops, military equipment, and hundreds of thousands of spectators.

The event came under fire last week after social media footage showed thousands of re-enactors rehearsing for the event, despite a government ban on gatherings of more than 50 people.

Will Russia Cancel It's Massive Victory Day Parade And Celebrations On May 9?

The Guardian: Russia defies calls to halt Victory Day parade rehearsals

Defence ministry presses on with plans for 9 May event with 15,000 troops, despite coronavirus pandemic.

Russia is holding rehearsals for its Victory Day parade, scheduled for 9 May despite the coronavirus crisis, as the Kremlin resists cancelling a patriotic holiday with major political significance.

The Russian president, Vladimir Putin, is supposed to host France’s Emmanuel Macron and other world leaders at a military parade to mark the 75th anniversary of the end of the second world war. The event is a significant historical landmark for Russia and a coveted photo opportunity to claim Putin’s re-emergence from political isolation in the west.

WNU Editor: For the moment all preparations and rehearsals will continue (see above video). In Russia everyone goes out in their city/town/village on May 9 to watch their version of a Victory Day parade. If you want to infect a good portion of your population with this disease, I cannot think of a better way. I personally hope they will cancel, but they will not. This is the 75th anniversary of the defeat of the 'Nazis, and everything is being done to make it the biggest celebration since 1945. The only scenario where I can see them cancelling everything is if the hospitals are overflowing with patients, the morgues are filled, bodies are on the street, and no one is being buried because the grave-diggers are either sick or dead. Then, and only then, they may cancel it (and that is a big maybe). On a personal note. I am/was suppose to be in the Russian city of Vyazma with my mother on this day. It is a city that is about 100km west of Moscow, and my mom (along with her two sisters) are the last surviving members of the city that was destroyed by the Germans during the Second World War. The city was going to honour my mom, but with all international flights into Russia cancelled or restricted, and with the Covid-19 coronavirus raging in Canada where I live, I told my mom and the people that I know in Vyazma that such a trip and my mom's participation will not be possible. They understand, but they still want to honour my mom on what she and my family went through, and they will do so in the future.
