Violence Erupts In Karachi, Pakistan; At Least 80 Dead -- L.A. Times

Police in Karachi are given orders to shoot on sight gunmen behind a wave of violence that has trapped residents in their homes and left parts of Pakistan's largest city deserted. The latest in a years-long string of attacks is blamed on political and economic battles involving rival parties and organized-crime gangs.

Reporting from Islamabad, Pakistan — Police in Pakistan's largest city, Karachi, struggled Friday to rein in a wave of violence that has claimed the lives of at least 80 people in the last four days and left sections of the city largely deserted.

Karachi, a port city of 18 million, has been plagued by violence for years, much of it related to links between the city's political leaders and its organized-crime gangs. Fueling the violence is the years-long battle between rival gangs for Karachi's prime real estate, which can yield millions of dollars in profits.
