Chinese Assail Japan Over Island Dispute; Japan Shuts Down Plants -- USA Today

BEIJING -- Thousands of Chinese demonstrated in streets and at embassies Tuesday in unprecedented protests assailing Japan over its claims to an island chain that the Communist government says belong to China, prompting Japan to shutter factories in China.

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, who is visiting China, urged calm while his Chinese counterpart warned Japan of possible "further actions" and thousands of Chinese joined anti-Japanese protests in several Chinese cities.
