The Great Sphinx and the pyramids of Giza are now the target of a radical Salafist jihadist leader.
Murgan Salem al-Gohary, 50, an Islamist leader twice-sentenced under former President Hosni Mubarak for advocating violence, told Egyptian media that the historical landmarks are 'idolatrous' and must be destroyed.
The threats are being taken seriously as ten years ago Gohary helped smash a pair of giant Buddha statues in Afghanistan.

My Comment: I posted this story a day or two ago .... and it still disturbs me. I know that these people are sick .... but what is really disturbing is the silence from the Egyptian government, silence from the Egyptian President, and the realization that this Islamist leader enjoys a great deal of support in the Islamic world.

Agreed.
Should these iconic landmarks fall at the hands of Islamics while the Egyptian government does nothing, not only do I expect internal conflict to spring up due to this, but a sign that the world has truly entered a dark period in its life.
