Darkness at Noon Prayers: Inside The Islamic Police State -- Jamie Dettmer, Daily Beast
Stalin, Castro, Pol Pot came before. The techniques of totalitarianism are not unique to ISIS. But here’s the scariest thing about them. They work.
The gunmen lined them up—men, women, and children—in the village of Ras al-Maa west of Baghdad and unceremoniously slaughtered them all. That was the first in a wave of mass executions last week of tribal figures in Anbar province who dared to defy the militants of the so-called Islamic State. Spectators were then invited to observe the dead while their killers filmed the bloodied, bullet-riddled corpses with their cellphones for social-media sharing.
Those gunned down weren’t Christians or Yazidis or Shia Muslims, the usual victims of the self-proclaimed caliphate’s cruelty. They were Sunni Arabs, and the killings underlined the fact that the violence of the militant insurgency is not reserved for those deemed infidels, but is unleashed against any who oppose it, or who might, including co-religionists.

My Comment: Terror has always worked .... a fact that the Islamic State is now more than willing to apply to the territories that it has conquered.

I have some disagreements with this article, they may prove to be minor. There is a difference between this type of terror and what was practiced by the West. Yes Stalin, Hitler, and Pol Pot all had show trials, but the ultimate fate of the accused was usually hidden. This gave it an even more sinister cast in that people just disappeared. It also gave the perpetrators some cover later on. Of course there were exceptions such as the Holodomor, but these people make public punishment part of the plan. By being public they are forcing locals to be part of the crime and culpable. They are making specific enemies that will never forgive them. These people are also experienced in wearing the mask (from being under Hussein and Assad). ISIS knows this so they'll will always be paranoid and will always have to rule with an iron fist. ISIS is trying to counter act this by subversion of the young, good luck on that, it has been tried many time in the past and always prove to be a chimera. The retribution will be terrible when it comes. Publius, I coming more and more over to your assertion that this is a modern reincarnation of the 30yrs War.

James what do you think of my answer to you regarding the US congress and the possible change to a more aggresive foreign politics regarding Ukraine? I think I posted the whole answer in the Ukraine thread with 12 comments

The Saudis are not going to like this. So:
(1) Will they intervene?
(2) If they intervene, when will it be?
Al Qaeda attacked a border post at AL Wadiah, Saudi Arabia. The Saudis cannot like that either. It would seem they cannot simply wait things out and let the Houthis and AQAP kill each other.
(3) When will Saudi Arabia take delivery of a Pakistani nuke? They already bought Chinese ballistic missiles, which are nuclear capable.

James ... maybe a hundred years war.
Aizino,
My guess is the Sauds already have one or more.
James,
Saudi Arabia already has nuclear capable missiles (DF-3)
Recently they bought the DF-21 which is also nuclear capable.
I am not sure if the Pakistani nukes can be placed on a ballistic missile warhead.
But since Abdul Qadeer Khan spread nuke tech from North Korea to Pakistan, Iran, Libya and who knows who else, I would assume that the Saudis can put nukes on their ballistic missiles.
(1) Just how bad will the Saudi-Iran proxy war get before it gets really big (& blows up)?

Supporting the Persian Spring would have been a good deal. But that chance was squandered.
Now people just want a 'wall' around the the Middle East and let turkey, Saudi Arabia and Iran go at it.
I am kind of in that camp now. There certainly are not any minorities in the Middle East anymore. So there really is nothing there to defend. There are just side A & Side B would do not like anyone who is not them. The oil can stay in the ground or burn for all I care.
Aizino,
Answer to #1, we're very close. Yes, the Persian Spring was a squandered chance.
You can't wall it in. It will come looking for us (again).
