Navy Times: Pentagon: 10 U.S. sailors taken into Iranian custody to be returned
Ten sailors and two boats were taken into Iranian custody Tuesday after their patrol boats drifted into Iranian-claimed waters, according to two defense officials.
The riverine sailors are believed to have drifted into Iranian territory after having mechanical issues with their boats. The defense officials said Secretary of State John Kerry was immediately involved and Iran has agreed to turn the sailors and vessels over, though they have not been turned over as of 4 p.m., Eastern Standard Time.

I guess they can't bother to point out that 4 pm EST, is roughly 1am in the Gulf, and the severing of relations with Iran by the petty Kingdoms of the Gulf is probably creating some issues, like flying the crews to any USN base in the Gulf.

Iran is in a different time zone? Amazing. How could we expect the Pentagon to know that. Of course the Navy talks about "Arabian Gulf" so there you go. There's no such place.
Anyhow, these guys probably are learning some Persian which would put them past anybody else the US has stationed there in the "Arabian Gulf", 50,000 plus troops and dependents "protecting America."
What regular sailor's where doing on special forces boat ?.

They are Navy, not SOF.
The question is, what are two US Navy Riverine boats, doing in the middle of the Gulf off a top secret IRGCN base?
If they were in transit between Kuwait and Bahrain, they were way off course in dangerous waters, ( one sea state 2, something that would barely wet the decks of a Coastal Patrol boat, would put 10 bodies in the water)
If they were conducting a "training" mission as one other Pentagon report claims, again, what are they doing out in blue water off an IRGCN base?
One Pentagon statement reported in the media states that they missed a rendezvous with a fuel supply ship,

Seals have "stealth" boats good to sea state 5, Seals also have stealth minisubs, silent RIB's and "swimming" platforms.
If the "mission" was to put swimmers ashore on Farsi Island, the CB-90's the completely wrong platform for that.
It's designed for patrolling wide, flat rivers, enclosed harbours, deep marshes and is "loud" as hell and gulps fuel like Top Fuel dragster. Point A to B along a coastline, it's supposed to hug the coast, as between the fuel demands and limited sea keeping ability, it's supposed to run for port at the first sign of bad weather.
Reports are coming in now that the boats were part of the Riverines, which have been trying to position themselves as the "forward tip of the spear", trying to displace traditional SOF and Marine roles and deployments.
This looks like a FUBAR of all FUBARs. I will not be surprised if some careers are going to be flushed down the toilet because of this. But a lot of information is still unknown. We are probably not getting the full story right now.

Given that the House of Commons Committee inquiry into the Royal Navy incidents was completed, then classified and not even released to the House, the PM's Office or the Security Committee,
And that was 6 years ago, we might find out what actually happened, 50 years from now.
It is late for me right now Jay .... I am about to hit the sack. But I am browsing the Iranian news websites .... it is interesting that with the exception of Press TV .... all of the other sites are not even reporting on the story. This will probably change in the next few hours .... but this lack of coverage is a surprise.

I'm pretty sure the US military is aware of the time difference between Iran and eastern standard time in the US. Furthermore I'm pretty sure everyone reading the information on this is aware of this as well.
If the roles were reversed and the US detained Iranian vessels and sailors, the media would be howling with rage against the Americans as opposed to the minimal coverage we are getting here. Given the minimal coverage, I think it is probably safe to assume the Iranians are in the wrong. If the Americans were, the media would be running allot harder with this one.
I suspect some careers will be ruined. In order to get the Iranians to release these people, such things would need to happen.
Furthermore the 50,000 plus troops are indeed "protecting America" in the sense that their deployment to this region is as a direct result of multiple existential threats facing America. With that said, if I were POTUS and I had the power to actually do this, I would have these troops deployed in different positions such as along America's borders and off its coasts. I believe that doing this would have greater utility for America's defense than the current deployments.
