RT: Danger close: Spotted by ISIS, Russian special forces officer called for fire on himself

A Russian Special Operations Forces officer reportedly called a strike onto himself when he was compromised and surrounded by ISIS militants near Palmyra, where a fierce battle between the Syrian army and terrorists is in full swing.

“A Russian special operations forces [SOF] officer was killed near a town of Palmyra while guiding Russian warplanes to IS [previously ISIS/ISIL] targets,” a military source at Russia’s airbase Khmeimim told Interfax news agency on Thursday.

The source added that the special forces operator was on a mission near Palmyra for at least a week, detecting the terrorists’ most important targets and providing coordinates for Russian warplanes to strike.

“The officer died as a hero, calling a strike onto himself after he was compromised and surrounded by terrorists,” the source added.

WNU Editor: I am surprised that he was by himself (if this story is true) .... that is not normal Russian military behaviour in a hostile zone.

Soviet Doctrine was that Forward Air Controllers were RASF Officers, attached at the Battalion Level, equipted with their own vehicle, observation equiptment, target designation gear and comms gear, who acted both independently and in concert with the rest of the Battalion.

Given that both the fight for, and the defense of Palmyria has been concentrated on the overlooking hills, it would not be surprising that a RASF FAC positioned himself on the side slope of a flanking hill, for a "better view" of the attack, the defence and the sightlines of the avenues of an ISIS retreat.

We have seen lot's of vids of Kornet crews killing jihadi's from a side hill, as the SAA attack went in from the front.

That the hill he positioned himself on also concealed an ISIS group is not surprising, as their key tactic around Palmirya has been to have concealed squads and defences on all the overlooking hills.
