The U.S. Is Preparing For A Tank War With Russia

Patrick Tucker, Defense One: How the Pentagon is Preparing for a Tank War With Russia

Reactive armor and cross-domain fire capabilities are just some of the items on the Army’s must-have list.

When Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster briefs, it’s like Gen. Patton giving a TED talk — a domineering physical presence with bristling intellectual intensity.

These days, the charismatic director of the Army’s Capabilities Integration Center is knee-deep in a project called The Russia New Generation Warfare study, an analysis of how Russia is re-inventing land warfare in the mud of Eastern Ukraine. Speaking recently at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C., McMaster said that the two-year-old conflict had revealed that the Russians have superior artillery firepower, better combat vehicles, and have learned sophisticated use of UAVs for tactical effect. Should U.S. forces find themselves in a land war with Russia, he said, they would be in for a rude, cold awakening.

“We spend a long time talking about winning long-range missile duels,” said McMaster. But long-range missiles only get you through the front door. The question then becomes what will you do when you get there.

WNU Editor: Before the U.S. and Russia are engaged in massive tank battles .... nuclear weapons will probably be flying in the air before the first tank is destroyed.

The U.S. lurches from one type of combat to the next. Counterinsurgency to giant armies fighting on the battlefield to IEDs, etc. This article merely describes the next round of arming up with the latest technologies and systems.

It keeps the arms suppliers busy.

If the Editor is correct, then the U.S. should not modernize against Russia because "Before the U.S. and Russia are engaged in massive tank battles .... nuclear weapons will probably be flying in the air before the first tank is destroyed." This could save the U.S. a lot of money and stop the next round of an arms race before it happens.

A TV President once asked his Chief of Staff a question about retaliation. The answer was something like this is the way the game is played and it is the only solution. Perhaps arming up again with conventional forces is the only way to stop the nukes from flying. Or maybe it is stopping little green men and their political masters before they start to enjoy the taste of blood sports.

In War Gaming it out, the "best" that NATO ever achieved, ( in 55 years) , against The Soviet Union/ Warsaw Pact/ Russia/ China, was 22 hours before full on nuclear war.
