Do We Need A New Grand Bargain With Russia?

James Stavridis, Time: We Need a New Grand Bargain With Russia

Admiral Stavridis was the 16th Supreme Allied Commander at NATO and is Dean of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University

Here’s a 4-point plan

As we contemplate the lazy days of late August, we need to bear in mind that a reckoning is coming sooner rather than later in Western relations with the Russian Federation. It is easy to feel the slow burn in Moscow watching the Olympics unfold with so many Russian athletes justifiably barred from the competition. Russia also feels intense frustration over the ongoing sanctions imposed following the invasion of Ukraine and the annexation of Crimea, as well as the increasing costs of Syrian operations in support of the brutal dictator Bashar al-Assad, which also continues to sour relations with the U.S. and Europe.

WNU Editor: The author of this post (James Stavridis) is close to Hillary Clinton .... Hillary Clinton is reportedly vetting a retired 4-star admiral for vice president (Business Insider), and this commentary is not going over-well in Russia .... but a ranching-up of rhetoric and a desire to start a new Cold War. As to what is my take .... it is not a grand bargain that is needed, it is a resolution to the ongoing crisis in Ukraine that will temper down tensions and mistrust between Russia and the West. Unfortunately .... I see no  interest in the Hillary Clinton camp who wants to touch this issue, and the Kremlin knows this.

The DNC can put America in a death spiral and as we pass every 'loop' the DNC will take no credit for the bad, but blame it on the Republicans Meanwhile they will claim credit various initiatives and for caring.

The power comes not from reaching a fair accord with Russia, but the optics and subsequently winning the vote on even years.
