Pentagon Considering Sending Ground Combat Forces To Syria

CNN: Pentagon might propose sending ground troops to Syria

Washington (CNN)The Defense Department might propose that the US send conventional ground combat forces into northern Syria for the first time to speed up the fight against ISIS, CNN has learned.

"It's possible that you may see conventional forces hit the ground in Syria for some period of time," one defense official told CNN.

But the official emphasized that any decision is ultimately up to President Donald Trump, who has ordered his defense secretary to come up with a proposal to combat ISIS before the end of the month.

The move would significantly alter US military operations in Syria if approved and could put troops on the ground within weeks.

Update: Pentagon may recommend U.S. deploy combat troops in Syria: CNN (Reuters)

WNU Editor: When it came to Syria (and Iraq) .... the Pentagon and the previous Obama administration were doing what I called at the time "mission creep" .... but this new policy .... if adopted .... would be a major change and escalation. And while I can understand the desire to destroy the Islamic State as quickly as possible ....U.S. intervention in this part of the world has shed a lot of blood and treasure, and I have trouble digesting any proposal that will only continue these policies of the past.

IF we can destroy ISIS quickly and the sooner this accomplished the less non-ISIS bloodshed there will be and the less treasure spent. Also, a move to quash ISIS quickly will also minimize the loss in American lives. The operative word is IF this can be done?

Can a broken down, worn out military badly in need of rebuilding as America do this job in the manner necessary? Also, Russia is heavily involved here as well. Any actions here will need to be closely coordinated with the Russians. Any action here needs to be taken with extreme prudence of thought. Remember this is a VERY tough enemy. Even though we think more troops may help, the enemy is very adaptable. Again, this is going to need to be done with extreme of prudence of thought and I tend to agree probably is a policy that should not be pursued.

This is another leak. Portrayed as braking news US Policy alert. I guess we'll just be privy to pretty much any idea that's discussed in classified briefings going forward. Or until these rogue intel factions are rooted out and destroyed.

Since day one, of the Syrian Spring, there has always been a faction of the Pentagon that wanted direct, large military intervention in Syria.

The only difference between 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and now, is there wasn't anybody reckless enough or dumb enough at the JCS, NSC or the White House to green light the project.

I would leave the country rather than go unless there was a full national draft, voted upon and approved by Congress
