Did the Russians interfere in US elections or not? Has the US interfered in Russia's political affairs or not? It does seem clear that any interference by Russia is fairly minimal compared to US interference in Russian affairs. I'm not so sure US leadership really wants to travel this road. Unfortunately crazies will do just about anything.
Regardless the situation it seems that for Trump to have conducted a public dressing down of Putin arguably the most powerful man in the world would not have ended well. As such, a certain degree of diplomatic finesse is going to need to be utilized in situations such as this.

"Is that you fred?" No, I don't think so. Fred would insult me with baseless accusations at least using a screen name other than "anonymous."
So I am "trolling?" Lets face it. Our country hasn't won a war since WW2. Is it really going to be such a good idea to try and face down arguably the most powerful military force on the planet for what appear to be nothing more than partisan political reasons? We better have a VERY good reason for this. So far the reasons presented are well, wanting at best and that is being charitable.
Even Germany appears to have moved on with huge oil deals with Russia at the expense of NATO. I think they still like the largess of NATO without the costs. As such, they haven't formally withdrawn. Furthermore there have been stirrings in France about lifting their sanctions on Russia. We aren't going to have any allies to help us stand down Russia. Perhaps we have Polish and Ukrainian chumps. They love their American cannon fodder!!
Instead of insults and saying you are bored it might be best to try and address the issues raised. By taking such an approach indicates you have nothing constructive to contribute.

Sometimes POTUS does speak off the cuff so to speak and sometimes does get ahead of himself. With that said I would rather have someone who is genuine and is acting on behalf of American interests rather than someone who is not even if that someone is less than perfect. US intelligence services are legendary for their incompetence. As such, if I were POTUS, I would be extremely cautious about trusting them. Perhaps he should stick to his guns on this.
The article that the editor linked to in an earlier post "Trump is magnificently right - this time about Russia" is essentially spot on. I would say this is his "must read of the day." He states that this "interference" was like a "fraternity prank" compared to what we have been doing. This assessment is essentially spot on what with the constant NGO activity the US government has been involved in or at the very least failed to condemn. Also, as the editor pointed out awhile back, Russia and China have been meddling in each other affairs for decades.
Why the big deal now? I suspect it is because one side lost and had that side won we wouldn't have heard anything.
Actually there are two ways to handle this. 1.)IF this is going to be used to foment a new Cold War, all sources and methods need to be released to the American people. "Just trust us" is NOT good enough. We need to know exactly why our families are being placed in such peril. Given the less than stellar track record of US intelligence the urgency is even greater. 2.)Treat this the same way "meddling" was treated in the past during Cold War 1 and beyond. In other words, handle through diplomatic channels and in other less overt ways.
I personally think approach 2 is the preferable approach. It does seem clear that a public dressing down of the Russian leader would not only not advance our interests but it would actually undermine the entire diplomatic effort. As such, he was absolutely right not to do this. By suggesting he should have his critics appear to be either stark raving mad, ideologically blind, or some combination.

I just spent the last hour listening to NPR, and the narrative was
-Russian interfered in our elections
-Hillary lost due to Russian interference
-The Russians were extremely effective at interfering (beyond our wildest dreams)
-We need to do more to protect our voting centers and ballot collections from future attacks.

In the run up to this, Putin and Netanyahu met. I'm sure all of this works together with the summit. The timing of this makes it unlikely that the two aren't related. Since neither Putin, Netanyahu, or Trump waste their time on trivial pursuits, I think we can be very certain all of this works together and there are agreements in place on what to do about Iran. It would be a shame to see all of this derailed due to American partisan politics. In this case, we really would be a laughingstock. In fact, we would be wrose than a laughingstock.
The NPR segment only for a second covered what was released in the Podesta emails and instead of talking about it's content just concentrated on the weaponization of it by the Russians. They lightly glossed over Obama and the Israel elections (in full defense of him as he did nothing wrong) and didn't mention anything of the Ukraine and the overthrow of the Russian backed government as possible motivation for Russia to seek some vengeance against Hillary. But they tied it all together nicely by somehow bringing the email hack into the same light as attacking voters at the ballet box or defending against vote tampering(election meddling), because it can't be election meddling without election meddling...
