Dave Majumdar, National Interest: Who Really Shot Down Russia's Plane?

These are the complicated circumstances surrounding the incident and what they mean for Russia and Syria.

The Kremlin is attempting to tamp down tensions following the downing of a Russian Ilyushin Il-20M Coot-A intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft by Syrian air defenses during an Israeli raid on Assad regime forces.

An Assad regime operated S-200 surface-to-air missile battery shot down the four-engine Russian turboprop as it attempted to engage four Israeli-owned Lockheed Martin F-16 fighters that were attacking Syrian targets. Fifteen Russian servicemen were killed during the incident, but officials in Moscow and Tel Aviv moved quickly to defuse tensions even though the Russian Ministry of Defense initially responded with fury against the Israelis. However, Russian president Vladimir Putin promptly ascribed the incident to the fog of war.

WNU Editor: The Kremlin is publicly blaming Syrian anti-aircraft batteries for shooting down this Russian military aircraft. But from what I am hearing among Russian pundits .... they are blaming Israel and their war against Iran.

Israel is in a war for survival, Russia isn’t. Iran has supplied 10’s of thousands of ballistic missiles to Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza. Russia has aided and abetted Iran’s drive for domination of Syria and stood aside as Iran built factories for ballistic missiles,
And weapons of mass destruction on Syrian soil. Russian aims to save Assad necessarily meant it would come between Iran’s drive to destroy Israel and Israel’s drive to survive. Maybe Russia ought to step aside?

So Israel will do things that are putting Russians at risk to achieve its goals against Iran.

Russia will hurt Israel in some way.

Which does not mean that Israel or others will not hurt Russia in return.

Honestly, the fact that Syria is guilty is not a surprise. They have lost their best technician at the beginning of the uprising because they was Sunni.
Even that, Israel blast the nuclear plant in progress with NoKo although it was defended with one of the best system (Pantsir) supposedly good even against "stealth" planes. Israel attack with F-15 which are all but stealth. Almatz engineers went to Syria to see what was wrong because it was just unbelievable. Poor Syria.

I’m reading news reports that Russia has shut down sea and air traffic in the Eastern Med. USS Harry S Truman strike group is almost in the vicinity. This may get interesting.

If Russia inflicts any or many Israeli, Kurdish or American casualties it will not play well in the Wussia, Wussia, Wussia atmosphere.

They will have to wait until the TPM or TP moved on to other subjects.
