Does Europe Need Its Own Army?

WNU Editor: If European leaders are so eager to have a military force that is independent of NATO .... what is then the purpose of NATO? French President Macron remarks that the EU needs an independent military to protect itself from Russia, China, AND the U.S. only makes President Trump's case that a rethink is needed on what should hen be the future of NATO .... Trump torches allies, threatens NATO pullout after tense WWI memorial trip to Paris (Business Insider)

One has to ask why Macron taunted Trump before he arrived in France as a guest of France? Why did he taunt him in a speech dedicated to an event last occurring 100 years ago? Why do the French continue the taunts after Trump left France?

France has never been fond of NATO as a military organization. They did withdraw from NATO military participation for a few decades. Looks like they may do it again.

Does the EU need an army? I would say that each country needs a military force that is capable of defending it and is tailored to each nation's unique interests and to the unique threats each nation faces.

The US military is stretched to thin, is nearing the breaking point, and needs to be deployed elsewhere to properly defend America and its unique interests. To place this kind of burden on the American military and the American people is not only unreasonable IMHO but is unethical.

I've known for a long time that we would need to disengage from this. I had hoped that this could be done in an orderly fashion amid an atmosphere of mutual respect but always suspected this may not be possible. After all we have been Western Europe's b!tch boy for decades. They don't respect us. Now along comes Trump who for all his flaws insists that America be treated with respect and equality.

The French leadership feels a need to protect Europe against an America. Obviously the United States is not going to invade Western Europe. Surely he knows this. Of course he does. As such, why would Europe need defending against that which is not going to happen? This can only be because he and other western European leaders plan on invading the United States when the timing is right from their perspective. As such, I would suggest the United States develop its forces and deploy them in such a way as to be able to defend America against a European invasion.
