Douglas Murray, The Spectator: Angela Merkel is on her way out – and so is her vision for the EU

Britain is on the way out of the EU and taking leadership and dynamism that is sorely lacking on the continent.
Macron's popularity in France is right up there with skanky red wine from America.
Merkel is toxic to her own country men, for darn good reasons.
Italy and Poland challenge EU legitimacy often over national causes.

The EU will survive but not quite thrive. But the charade the European EU members ran against the USA is finished. No more will the USA treat NATO members interests different from EU members economic interests. Trump finished that performance and no future president will tolerate another show. So in the future, EU economic warfare against the US will be counted against the US's participation in NATO.

Hard times ahead for Continental Europe. Good times for Britain and Norway two nations not in the EU but in NATO and occupying vital real estate as far as the USA is concerned.

If Merkel had retired in 2014, Europe would have had a future, but the she refused to leave.
