Business Insider: Senior Chinese military officer calls for attacks on US ships in the South China Sea

* A senior Chinese military officer urged the Chinese Navy to use force to counter US activities in the South China Sea.
* A People's Liberation Army Air Force senior colonel argued at a conference Saturday that the Chinese PLA Navy should ram US Navy warships that try to conduct freedom-of-navigation operations in "Chinese waters" in the South China Sea.
* Such an aggressive action would certainly constitute an escalation after a near-miss incident in September, when a PLAN destroyer nearly collided with a US warship in the South China Sea.

The South China Sea is a powder keg, and one senior Chinese military officer seems interested in lighting the fuse even further.

Dai Xu, a People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) senior colonel and president of the Institute of Marine Safety and Cooperation, suggested last weekend that the Chinese navy use force to counter US freedom-of-navigation operations in the South China Sea, Taiwan News reported Sunday. He spoke at a conference hosted by the nationalist, state-backed Chinese tabloid Global Times.

Is this an Onion sourced story?

The reason I ask is this statement: "Dai Xu, a People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) senior colonel and president of the Institute of Marine Safety and Cooperation".

Hes involved in marine safety and he wants to potentially ram or sink another country's naval vessels? Seems unsafe to me.

He's also involved in cooperation yet ramming a warship very hostile and likely to lead to escalating violence. What the heck does the Institute for Marine Safety and cooperation really do?

I think that there is no comment needed for the idea suggested. It's clear to see how that can escalate.

The new normal is to push the boundaries of peace such that you have a low level war and this new normal will eventually show up in the S China Sea. We will need to push back thus they cannot hold hostage the world economy.

Yeah, until they can figure out a way to move those islands around they will just be endless target practice for tomahawks...

Wouldn't it be epic if Godzilla was real and he'd appear and just stamp on those islands? It'd totally also watch the movie that would come out like 2 years later.. 3D 4K! :D Michael Bay, Japan and the Pentagon should talk

Lori,

This officer is not being reprimanded or punished. He is viewed as a hardliner, and he was given a platform to make this statement. Who gave him this platform had to come from the Central Committee. This is what I call sending a message to the U.S. that the Chinese are now going to be "physical" when it comes to confronting U.S. naval vessels in the South China Sea.

I feel like I am reliving the Cold War. U.S. and Soviet vessels rammed each other during that period more than once.

I concur Lori. The U.S. is not what it was during Cold War 1. And China is not the Soviet Union.

WNU,
As you say, this not just this guy who is speaking.
