After a night of violent unrest in Hong Kong that left dozens of protesters hurt by a mob of attackers, US President Donald Trump said on Monday that Chinese President Xi Jinping had acted “responsibly” in allowing the demonstrations to continue.
“I’m not involved in it very much but I think President Xi of China has acted responsibly, very responsibly,” Trump told reporters in the White House when asked about the previous night’s violence. “They’ve been out there protesting for a long time.”
Seven weeks of demonstrations against proposed changes to Hong Kong’s extradition laws have been punctuated by violent clashes between protesters and police, fuelling Hongkongers’ anger at the city government, whose embattled leader continues to resist calls to resign.

If you use sanctions and put the trade war on the front burner again, the Democrats will say look the markets are jittery and GDP is trending lower.
Trump is trying to apply economic pressure on Xi without tanking the American economy. That might mean alternately increasing or decreasing pressure.
Is anyone up for an an all out economic assault? I think not. They are not for an all out assault militarily, politically, or economically.
Democrats might say they are, but we saw Kerry & Biden s___ big ____ to enrich their sons.

If Trump had said nothing or said we support the people of Hong Kong, you would have criticized him.
I do note that your favorite Democrat candidate has said nothing on the issue. Quiet as a church mouse. Uh huh!
Trump is the only person who has done anything to try to reverse the US China trade imbalance.

I am not sure who you believe is my favorite candidate since I do not have one at this point, but why should a candidate say something about Hong Kong at this point? in passing, my son is in that area. The Chinese will eventually crush freedom there. But I see no reason why an American president should come out in support of a commie dictator...and shifting the argument over to me or to the Dems is a rather shabby exercise is failing to defend the indefensible. The candidates have not been shy about criticizing Trump on foreign policy. So why should they be shy on Hong Kong?

Obama said sweet things about Xi. It is usually what diplomats do whether they mean it or not.
Here is a pro tip. China has not changed in 30 years. You just became vaguely aware that they are still a dictatorship. That is all. Your indignation is risible.

I have not seen Chinese talk about Freedom. They talk about jobs for their kids. That is what they talk about.

I read that Trump said this in the transcript of the President’s and Prime Minister Khan’s remarks and questions from the press prior to their closed-door meeting at the White House.
I hoped his response was just a result of Trump being his typical “wheeler-dealer” self,
trying to garner good feelings with Xi (or someone else), coupled with his ignorance on this issue.
Troubling. I understand that Hong Kong is legally a part of China now, but the Triad goon squads beating back the Enlightenment seems like it deserves a different response, which hopefully will come (depending on trade negotiations).
So it goes.
