Business Insider: Sweeping US Navy testing reveals most aircraft carrier sailors infected with coronavirus had no symptoms
* The Navy has tested nearly the entire crew of the deployed aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt for coronavirus, and the results offer insights into how the virus spreads and the importance of extensive testing.
* Calling the situation "disconcerting," Secretary of Defense Mark Esper revealed Thursday that more than half the crew never showed any symptoms — a finding that underscores the importance of social distancing to limit its spread.
* Navy officials told Reuters that roughly 60% of the carrier's infected sailors were asymptomatic.
* Rear Adm. Bruce Gillingham, the Navy surgeon general, said last week that "with regard to COVID-19, we're learning that stealth in the form of asymptomatic transmission is this adversary's secret power."
The US Navy has tested nearly the entire crew of the deployed aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt for the coronavirus, and the results offer some insight into the how the disease can spread undetected, especially among young, healthier populations.
The Navy is the military branch hardest hit by the coronavirus, with over 1,000 cases among military personnel. And, the majority of those cases, 660, are aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt.
Since the outbreak began in late March, the Navy has tested 94% of the ship, a force of roughly 4,800 personnel.
On NBC's "Today Show" Thursday, Secretary of Defense Mark Esper revealed that more than half of the infected sailors never had any symptoms.

WNU Editor: The discovery from the US Navy that most COVID-19 cases aboard the virus-stricken aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt are among sailors who are asymptomatic is deeply worrisome. This suggests the virus could be spreading more frequently by stealth mode in the broader population, with many more people walking around with the disease unaware that they are spreading it. Bottom line. It is a red flag to those who are following the spread of this pandemic that the coronavirus peak in the United States could last longer than expected.

Which means that for young sailors and the young in general, the virus is a nuisance, if that.
Clusters of people have been killed COVID going back forever. It was always blamed on flu. Befiore the advent of cheap and fast DNA sequence, if it presented as the flu, then the flu was blamed. Doctors did not test whether a person died of rhino, COVID or influenza. They did not know as recently as 25 or 30 years ago. The tests were not cheap or quick enough.
We have a paradigm shift due to the ability to discriminate thing down to a genetic level.
20 or 30 years ago, we identified cancer by what organ or part of the body it showed up in. Now they identify cancer not by organ, but by which for several to a dozen genes are knocked out or mutated. PARADIGM SHIFT.
Same thing with respiratory viruses. PARADIGM SHIFT. We have testing abilities that we simple did not have 30 years ago. We have the ability to mass test where before it had to be sent to a lab and the labs were big bottlenecks. COVID has always been with us.
Sailors are living so close together it's impossible to not get infected. I was a Marine on an LST,they pack you in like sardines!
Can you hear that on the horizon?
What?
WW3 coming
WW3?
I think not.
But if it comes, it comes. It is all good.
Xi has a rotten track record. I was not impressed with his glorifying the Cultural Revolution. His track record, since then is of a punk. He is a dangerous punk, who knows how to skewer other communist party members, but that is it. The man has no real learning or discipline. He is a pot belly pig.
I think Putin is a better leader due to his street fights, training in law, training as an agent and whatever he has learned in politics. It remains to be seen, if he could have done better for Russia. Navigating oligarchies is always dangerous.
It will be interesting to compare the Roosevelt numbers (average age under 30) and a large cruise ship (average age over 55) and see what the differences are. Obviously there will be way more fatalities on the cruise ship, but the asymptomatic cases would be the eye opener.
1:52 is a good comment. We are keeping some variables close to constant constant like ship size and crew size, while varying another factor, age.
It is a much better comment than the news 'reporting' that we get from the press. You think those reporter gals & guys are playing darts blindfolded after being spun around.
