Should President Trump Have Been Briefed On The Russian Bounty Intelligence?

CNN: Former Intelligence officials scoff at White House denials that Trump wasn't briefed on Russia bounty

In response to reports that Russia offered bounties to Taliban fighters to kill US troops in Afghanistan, the White House has denied that President Donald Trump was "personally briefed" on the matter, claiming that the intelligence "wasn't verified."

But a US official familiar with the latest information told CNN on Monday that intelligence about the Russian bounty was included in the President's Daily Briefing (PDB) sometime in the spring. The written document includes the intelligence communities' most important and urgent information. On Monday night, the New York Times reported that the information was included in a written briefing to the President in late February.

Trump is not known to read his daily briefing, and instead prefers an oral briefing a few times a week.

These latest revelations come as numerous former senior intelligence officials are pushing back on the White House denials, saying it was "absurd," "ridiculous," and "inconceivable" that the President would not have been briefed on such critical intelligence that potentially put US soldiers in harm's way.

WNU Editor: When I first I started this blog, I learned very quickly that the debate on what to put in a Presidential intelligence briefing has been an ongoing discussion for years. In this case, if the New York Times/Washington Post reporting is accurate, U.S. intelligence learned that a lot of US money was found in a Taliban outpost, and the prisoners told those that captured them that it was given to them by Russians to kill US soldiers. The problem with that story is that the Taliban do not need to be bribed with money to kill US soldiers. They are doing it for free. And considering the source .... low level Taliban prisoners and criminals .... not a very good source of intel. So to notify the President based solely on this intel is to me a waste of time. And considering when this intel was brought up the chain of command, in the middle of a pandemic that was gripping the world, it would have been an unnecessary diversion. As to the accuracy of the media on reporting this story. It is revealing to me that Richard Grenell, who was the acting Director of National Intelligence during this time and who would be privy to all intel, is saying that this is the first time he is hearing this. Which (for me) puts into doubt the entire media narrative behind this story.

Update: Even NBC has trouble making the case .... Russia intel mystery: How strong is the case Russia bribed the Taliban to kill Americans? (NBC).

True. But money may induce them to increase their operating tempo or plan more far reaching or riskier ventures.

There are plenty of reason to go after Russia like the lead up to the Iraq War and the Russians selling GPS jammers to Hussein. But this whole exercise is not about Russia, but about American politics.

The Democrat 'outrage' on this story is just a bit too coordinated. Their hypocrisy is glaring because Iran - who directly killed over 600 US troops - enjoyed an 8-year stream of riches and pardons from the Obama/Biden admin. China - which has done far more damage to the US than the Russians ever have - are strongly defended by the Dems. Any criticism of China is called... wait for it... racist.

Now this fake news on Russia paying bounties on US troops and pop goes a synchronized leap to horror and amazement. Give me a break.

Narrative makes perfect sense.

If Flynn is free and Trump is reelected ...

"Flynn targeted for destruction because he wanted to investigate Brennan's 'off the books' billions of dollars at CIA?"

We saw how American foreign aid in Ukraine was laundered back to East Coast elites. Is the America MIC the only way to enrich yourself with US tax payer money?

If the State Department will launder money, what about the CIA. Or would that be faux pas, because the CIA is staffed by angels?

Maybe there is more behind Brennan's animus than love of Obama's brilliance and TDS.

Rogers conducted a review of FISA and other stuff. He made note that he found something, but he stayed well enough away so as to not open a can of worms.

In early New England, bonuses were paid for Indian scalps. It proved a lucrative way to make some spending money.
In the Korean War, the Russians sent Migs and pilots to train the
Chinese to fight America and our allies. We kept fairly silent about this for fear of widening the war.
Grinnell has a questionable background and had been out of intel business when this story came about.
But if Russia denies it, then it must not be so, right?
If Trump does not read intel dailies: he is not doing his job
If some of his people kept this from him, then they need to be let go

he growing friction between U.S. and Russian troops in Syria comes against a backdrop of deepening mistrust between the national security community. | Baderkhan Ahmad, File/AP Photo

Russian forces are encroaching on U.S. troop-controlled territory in eastern Syria — part of what officials say is a deliberate campaign to squeeze the U.S. military out of the region, according to two current U.S. officials and one former U.S. official.

The growing friction between U.S. and Russian troops in Syria comes against a backdrop of deepening mistrust between the national security community and President Donald Trump’s White House over dealings with Moscow. The tension burst into the open last week with revelations that Russia’s secretive military intelligence service offered bounties to the Taliban for killing U.S. and coalition troops in Afghanistan. Lawmakers demanded answers this week amid bipartisan anger that the Trump administration has known about the bounties for months but has not yet authorized a response to Russia.

Trump has denied being briefed on the bounties, but a Western defense official confirmed the arrangement to POLITICO. Other administration officials have said the intelligence is still being evaluated and have criticized the media for reporting on the issue.

The disclosure of the bounty program has highlighted emerging frictions between the U.S. and Russia in other areas, including in Syria.

WASHINGTON — The White House and top National Security Council officials learned about intelligence indicating Russia was offering bounties on U.S. and coalition troops in early 2019, a person with direct knowledge of the intelligence confirms to NBC News, well over a year before President Donald Trump claimed no one had briefed him about the matter.

That intelligence, which the Trump administration has yet to act on, “was out there” at least a month before an April 2019 car bomb attack in Afghanistan that killed three U.S. Marines, the individual said. That attack has come under scrutiny as U.S. officials seek to determine whether any Americans died as a result of the Russian plot.

Two senior administration officials told NBC News on Monday that the White House does not believe there is a link between the deaths of the three Marines in April 2019 and Russia’s offer to pay bounties. Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, said that top officials told lawmakers in the Situation Room on Monday that “no one had been killed” as a result of Russia’s bounty offer. But other U.S. officials have said it’s unclear or that the Russian effort may indeed have led to deaths.

“The new information emerged as the White House tried on Monday to play down the intelligence assessment that Russia sought to encourage and reward killings — including reiterating a claim that Mr. Trump was never briefed about the matter and portraying the conclusion as disputed and dubious,” the newspaper reported. “But that stance clashed with the disclosure by two officials that the intelligence was included months ago in Mr. Trump’s President’s Daily Brief document — a compilation of the government’s latest secrets and best insights about foreign policy and national security that is prepared for him to read. One of the officials said the item appeared in Mr. Trump’s brief in late February; the other cited Feb. 27, specifically.”

Due to the president’s fixation with sharing his thoughts on Twitter, we can see what he was focused on on February 27th.

Trump started February 27th on Twitter by hyping an upcoming campaign rally in North Carolina, which the president was hosting despite the pandemic.

He then retweeted a quote from Fox News anchor Trish Regan, blasting CNN for their coverage of the pandemic.

“Anti-Trump Network @CNN doing whatever it can to stoke a national Coronavirus panic. The far left Network pretty much ignoring anyone who they interview who doesn’t blame President Trump.” @trish_regan @FoxNews Media refuses to discuss the great job our professionals are doing!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) February 28, 2020

Trump then praised his Coronavirus Task Force for a “great job” and said cases of COVID-19 “look to be going down.”

Congratulations and thank you to our great Vice President & all of the many professionals doing such a fine job at CDC & all other agencies on the Coronavirus situation. Only a very small number in U.S., & China numbers look to be going down. All countries working well together!

The White House denies Trump knew anything about it, saying he was not briefed on the intelligence because officials disagreed on its veracity.

Steve Hall, the former chief of Russia operations at the CIA, told Insider the White House's claim is "horses---t" because threat intelligence is treated very differently than other types of sensitive intelligence.

"Ever since 9/11, any time you get any type of counterterrorism or threat reporting that speaks to whether Americans are going to get killed, that sort of information travels extremely quickly and doesn't have to be vetted," Hall said. "And that's all right, because the outcome could be horrific. You could have Americans killed."

If the underlying intelligence is questionable or if there's a debate on its credibility, "you convey that as well, but the one thing you don't do — and you're taught this as an intelligence officer from the very beginning — is just write it off," Hall said. "It would be intelligence malpractice for anybody in the IC to look at something like this that could result in Americans dying and say, 'We haven't validated the source, so we can't talk about it or brief the president about it.' That's just ludicrous."

Hall was one of three CIA veterans who spoke to Insider, all of whom said they were shocked that the president was either not briefed on intelligence about a threat to deployed US troops or failed to act after learning of it.
'The type of information that would be flagged as really important'

Here is a link to a blog by Daniel Greenfield.

Daniel is a real Jew unlike squirrel. Squirrel left Judaism a long time ago. Perhaps he can see it in the rear view mirror, but it is doubtful. He peeled out so fast and left such a large cloud of dust is was mistaken for a haboob.

Sure squirrel's shadow might haunt a synagogue, but IMO that is more to see and bee seen. Many so called Christians do the same. Now squirrel scored a handshake with Wiesenthal. Major virtue points! Like I said to see and be seen.

What Do the Democrats Propose to do About Russia?

What does squirrel, the one, the only, propose to do?

Details not adjectives.

Come on, you can do it squirrel!

So squirrel will go on a tirade, but won't answer the question.

Squirrel criticizes Trump but won't say what the alternative action should be.

What does he want?

a) Open War with Russia?
b) A shadow war with Russia with body counts of Russians repeated monthly by CNN?
c) More sanctions? Then list them.
d) More of being a gas bag and saying "We would do something better. We don't know what it is, but it would be better!"
