C4ISRNet: US Space Force confirms Space Based Infrared System detected missile attack in January

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Space Force confirmed that its Space Based Infrared System satellites were used to detect more than a dozen Iranian missiles aimed at U.S. war fighters in Iraq in January, giving Americans and their partners crucial warning.

On Sept. 15, Chief of Space Operations Gen. John “Jay” Raymond specifically credited space professionals assigned to the 2nd Space Warning Squadron at Buckley Air Force Base, Colorado, with providing that early warning, saving the lives of American and coalition forces.

“They operated the world’s best missile warning capabilities and they did outstanding work, and I’m very very proud of them,” he said during prepared remarks at the virtual Air Force Association 2020: Air, Space and Cyberspace Conference.

If true, I ran must be embarrassed. US space force is a mere infant compared to Iran's missile technology. Furthermore Iran's allies have space based military programs that are far more advanced than the US one is a present. As such, they should have been able to easily assist Iran in overcoming any warning system the US had in place even if Iran could not neutralize it themselves which again seems very unlikely.

My first thought is this story is not accurate. However, while Space Force wants to justify its existence, there were/are many, many powerful people who did not/do not want the US to have such a program and these people occupy very influential positions. As such, it would be impossible for Space Force to perpetuate such a lie if it were a lie. Therefore my conclusion, for now, is the story is true.

How did this happen? It stretches credibility past the breaking point to seriously suggest that an infant like Space Force could detect the launch of highly advanced missiles that will be designed to avoid such detection. Furthermore we would have expected Russian and Chinese techie assistance to the Iranians just in case something went wrong. Apparently Iranian technology failed and the Russian and Chinese assistance did not materialize. I've long suspected that the Iranian alliance with Russia and China is not as rock solid as it used to be. Perhaps this is why such assistance failed to materialize. Also, from where did the US receive techie help here? I'd suggest Israel as a possibility.

While Space Force is a step in the right direction. With the continued proper focus and time I think we will get where we need to be. At this, point this fledgling program is not going to be on the level as the major world powers. As such, I deem it very unlikely that Space Force did this on its own.

Judging by the casualties from the detected rocket attack I wouldn't be huffing and puffing. From what I've read, assuming the articles were accurate, we knew of the planned attack and responded a day or so before launch. Why people were still on the base has yet to be explained to me. I would have thought all would be a couple of miles away in a defensive posture prior to launch.

Bposter which allies? Russia or China? It'd be an act of war to jam. You're being a bit crazy now

Russia and China have been allies of Iran for quite some time. Act of war or not, I would expect Russia and China to "jam" us. I'd expect them to "go to the mat" for Iran. Ordinarly I'd say it'd be "crazy" to think otherwise as I don't think there's anything in our arsenal other than perhaps nukes that remotely concern them and even those they'd probably neutralize with cyber attacks before we could launch them.

Now the question becomes why didn't Russia and China help Iran. Perhaps this alliance isn't as risk solid as it once was. I've suspected this to be the case for awhile. After, at least prior to COVID-19, it was reported that Trump had forged good personal relations with Xi and Trump's attempts to forge constructive working relations with Putin. For whatever reason Trump critics have a mental block. They just can't seem to understanding how important it is if one wishes to survive and thrive to forge constructive relations with powerful people. For Russia and China not meeting this with any meaningful response, I credit Trump diplomacy.

Maybe my analysis is wrong. I hope it is.
