Moscow Times: EU Readying New Sanctions for Kremlin-Linked Wagner Mercenary Group

The European Union is readying new sanctions for Wagner, the Russian mercenary group with alleged links to the Kremlin, France’s foreign minister said Monday.

“There’s a common desire to draft a legal framework for sanctions against Wagner,” Russia’s Interfax news agency quoted Jean-Yves Le Drian as telling reporters in Brussels.

Wagner has been reported to be involved in conflicts in Ukraine, Africa and the Middle East in recent years.

See Modern War magazine issue #55

Syrian mercenaries are used by Turkey in Azerbaijan. Both Ukraine and Russia use Syrian mercenaries in Donbas. There are Syrian mercenaries on both sides in Libya. There are Syrian mercenaries in Venezuela.

All we are going to get is handwringing to score domestic political points. It is the modern equivalent of isolationism. They pretend to care. They point out things, but they do not reveal the complete breadth and scope of things and anything revealed is to improve their political position at home.

1) Will America troops train Syrian mercenaries in Ukraine?
2) Will America investigate the war crimes of Syrian mercenaries in Ukraine, who are their erstwhile allies.

I think #2 is a waste of time. Mostly. So many war crimes are happening daily that it is triage time. Qatar and perhaps UAE and Saudi Arabia might have started things or ramped them up after they started, but the US was there too. Maybe a little later than those 3, but they were there. Publicly Obama hemmed and hawed over non lethal aid/ Obama is such an angle. #SMART POWER. Privately the CIA was was buying or obtain Libya's arsenal. They destroyed some for the camera and sent other to Syria.

Syria was always going to blow up after Arab Spring. It was a matter, if the demonstrators were going to be rounded up and executed or after getting brutalized, they were going to get outside help.
A lot of the stuff is secret of course, but the press has been most unhelpful with dates and actions. Purposefully so.

But Lets talk Wagner again, because Russia is the enemy and we can only focus on a few shiny objects at a time.

Turkey, an EU member state, ships sanctioned terrorist groups around to use as their proxy forces in places like Libya, and even on the European continent itself in the case of Armenia/Azerbaijan, and it gets a pass. Hand wringing over nothing is exactly right.

Turkey is not part of the EU.

Maybe they made a mistake. Maybe they are a troll. Maybe they are using NATO and EU interchangeably. I am all for banning Turks from all decent countries until they acknowledge their Greek roots.
