War On The Rocks: Taiwan’s Defense Plans Are Going Off the Rails

As the United States talks more and more of defending Taiwan from an attack from the mainland, Taiwan’s military seems to be taking its defense preparations less and less seriously. Policymakers and voters alike increasingly see Taiwan as a friend worth protecting. After all, despite their many differences, the Trump and Biden administrations both signaled support for Taipei while working to bolster its defenses. Just this week, Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned Beijing that the United States would “take action” in response to an attack on Taiwan. Taiwan likewise enjoys deep bipartisan support in an otherwise divided Congress. Comedians are even starting to get in on the act. Problems arise with separation, specialization, and differentiation. Call it what you will. People do not know what it will take or it is some other professions problem and not theirs. They do not know what it will take in funding or other resources.

To be free you need a deep bench, which means a large pool of reserves. You need a large pool or everyone.

The Germans reconnoitred Switzerland in the run up to WW2. They wanted to see if it was feasible to invade. They saw the pillboxes alongside the avenues of approach/roads, which mean all of nothing. They are mere obstacles or speed bumps to drive around unless they are manned and the people mean it. The Germans decided not invade.

It is not that Switzerland was impregnable. It is that coupled with their other resource commitments, the NAZIs did not have enough resources. If they would have won in Russia, they would have given Switzerland another look.

Taiwan is never going to win. It is fish in a barrel. Can't win. Force correlation is too lopsided. They cannot win, but they can make China lose.

They have to get serious, to hold out long enough, to tie down enough, Chinese troops, to make China vulnerable.
