A new Covid variant that has more mutations than have been seen before is becoming dominant in South Africa and is feared to be ultra infectious and vaccine resistant, scientists warned today.
Experts said the variant is growing 'very quickly' in South Africa and is driving the country's surge in infections.
Around 100 cases of B.1.1.529, its scientific name, have been detected so far in three countries and the World Health Organization is convening an emergency meeting tomorrow to investigate the troubling strain.

What is the 95% or 85% confidence interval of the spike protein? If spike protein is not perfectly formed it can cell dock withy the receptor sometimes. It can dock with the receptor until the genetic code is so mutated that the protein formed is no longer recognizable as the spike protein. Should we think in terms of a "vector space"? How many elements in this space? Is it 10s, 100s, 1,000s?

I have a relative who was vaccinated in spring or summer and caught COVID anyway in the fall. They are also living with the one relative, who chose to remained unvaxxed. So this is not some esoteric exercise for me.

I tend to believe that a vaccinated person has less chance of getting severely ill because of memory B cells and memory T cells. If an expert give an opinion and can state a mechanism, then I generally believe them. I can compare it to what I know biology, economics, psychology etc.

If a person has been vaccinated but gets sick with COVID 6 months later, how do you know if it is a mild case that it is due to the vaccine and not their youth? You do not. You do not have the analytical tools.
