Radio Free Europe: Ex-President Poroshenko Defiant Ahead Of Return To Ukraine To Face Treason Charges

Former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko will return to Ukraine on January 17 to fight treason charges he says are a politically motivated attack by allies of current President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

Poroshenko, who has been out of the country since December, spoke on January 16 at a news conference in Warsaw, a day before he plans to fly from the Polish capital to Kyiv.

The 56-year-old former president, who is now a lawmaker and the leader of the opposition European Solidarity party, is under investigation for alleged treason linked to the sale of coal that helped finance Russia-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine in 2014-15 while he was in office.

Poroshenko and his party deny the charges and accuse Zelenskiy of political persecution at a time the country needs national unity to face Russian aggression.

Poroshenko is a chess piece. I have no idea what kind, but I believe he was told to go.

Maybe they told him they had his back without explicitly telling him how.

Maybe putting him on trial will give Moscow a pretext. Maybe not falling into that trap, will cause Kiev to fall in another trap. If he is not prosecuted out of fear or if he is and punches are pulled, then his ouster will make the anti-Russian faction to look bad.

Does Moscow what to use Poroshenko as a chip in the bank to be used in some indeterminate future? or will the chip be used within the length of a normal persecution process of weeks, a several months or 1 year?

Poroshenko's announcement is linked to some diplomatic or military gambit. It is not coincidence. If is diplomatic, it could be small.
