* American forces in the UAE stepped in to intercept two incoming ballistic missiles over Abu Dhabi with the help of Emirati forces.
* The UAE’s Ministry of Defense confirmed that there were no casualties from the attack, and that “fragments of the ballistic missiles fell in different areas” around Abu Dhabi.
* The targeted missile launch comes just one week after a deadly Houthi-claimed attack on Abu Dhabi that used what UAE officials say were drones and missiles.
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — American forces in the UAE stepped in to intercept two incoming ballistic missiles over the capital Abu Dhabi on Monday with the help of Emirati forces, U.S. Central Command said in a statement late that evening local time.
“U.S. forces at Al Dhafra Air Base, near Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, engaged two inbound missile threats with multiple Patriot interceptors coincident to efforts by the armed forces of the UAE in the early morning hours of Jan. 24, 2022,” the statement, issued more than 15 hours after the attack, said.
“The combined efforts successfully prevented both missiles from impacting the base.”
The UAE’s state media agency WAM did not initially report the U.S. intervention, which would mark the first such instance in the country. Al Dhafra houses roughly 2,000 U.S. service members and personnel.
