Will Finland And Sweden Join NATO?

* The threats have backfired with the US and Russia at odds over Ukraine

Finland and Sweden are 'closer than ever' to joing Nato after Russian threats backfired.

Vladimir Putin's demands that the US ban the Nordic nations from the alliance has made their joining more likely in the wake of heightened tensions around Russian troops along the border with Ukraine.

Sweden and Finland have been unaligned with a major military power since the Cold War but Russian rhetoric over an invasion of Ukraine has pushed them closer to Nato.

Long overdue

Indeed

Unless Sweden and Finland want to get the Polish treatment. Have Sweden as a neutral state or a Russian buffer state until it is too much work and they partition Sweden. Russian could get Stockholm as a buffer to protect Saint Petersburg and proud, free Swedes can move to Geatland. Everyone is happy!

"The Repnin Sejm (Polish: Sejm Repninowski) was a Sejm (session of the parliament) of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth that took place between 1767 and 1768 in Warsaw. This session followed the Sejms of 1764 to 1766, where the newly elected King of Poland, StanisÅ‚aw August Poniatowski, attempted with some successes to push through reforms to strengthen the government of the Commonwealth. These reforms were viewed as dangerous by Poland's neighbors, who preferred a weak Commonwealth and did not want to see it threaten their own political and military aspirations. The Russian Empire sent ambassador Nikolai Repnin, who became the driving force behind the Sejm proceedings. The Repnin Sejm marked one of the important milestones in increasing Polish dependence on the Russian Empire, and turning it into a Russian protectorate. This dependent position was bluntly spelled out in Nikita Ivanovich Panin's letter to King Poniatowski, in which he made it clear that Poland was now in the Russian sphere of influence"

"Although for a few decades, since the Silent Sejm, Russia had seen the weak Poland as its own protectorate, Poland had also been devastated by a civil war in which the forces of the Bar Confederation, formed in Bar, attempted to disrupt Russian control over Poland. The recent Koliyivschyna peasant and Cossack uprising in Ukraine also weakened the Polish position. Besides, the Russian-supported Polish king, Stanisław August Poniatowski, was seen as both weak and too independent-minded. Eventually, the Russian court decided that the usefulness of Poland as a protectorate had diminished."

Hans, just how much of your independence are you willing to give up?

If you fly on your side of the border, you have a right not to be shot down, right? Unless of course Ivan decides otherwise.

PS: Maybe Russia does not want Jamtland or Easter Sweden. Maybe they will be reasonable and take Gotland to protect their investment of the Nordstream pipeline?

I mean the people of Gotland are not really all that Swedish. They are Geats or something. Otherwise, it would be called Swedenland. If we place some Russian tanks on Gotland or there is some other Russian pressure. I am sure they would vote to become part of Kaliningrad oblast. Just have to have enough votes until they get clued in as to the proper answer to the question.

Because Sweden doesn't want to give up it's independence or any small part of it is likeky why Sweden will not be joining NATO and it's for this reason that I anticipate America will be withdrawing from NATO within the next five years. Perhaps the UK and Germany wish to carry pn!!

As for us we'll be nuch richer and more secure without this burden!! Good luck to whomever wishes to carry on with this!! As a side effect to our withdrawing from NATO, I'd anticipate saner policies from Poland, Ukraine, and a few others.
