French President Macron's Remarks After Meeting Russian President Putin Is Not What NATO Hardliners And The Leadership In Ukraine Wanted To Hear

The Guardian: Emmanuel Macron’s remarks on Russia set alarm bells ringing

Analysis: French president’s comments after Ukraine talks with Vladimir Putin should concern Nato alliance

Domestic critics of Emmanuel Macron, Nato hardliners and the leadership in Ukraine will be suspiciously examining the French president’s late-night remarks at his Moscow press conference on Monday for signs of freelancing.

At one level, Macron, three months from a re-election campaign, stuck pretty faithfully to the script he had exhaustively agreed with his Nato partners before his meeting with Vladimir Putin, but at another level his particular view of Russia as a European nation, and lofty talk of a new security guarantees, will have set alarm bells ringing.

WNU Editor: French President Macron definitely wants to find common ground and a security compromise with Moscow. What was also welcoming to hear from him was his support for adopting the Minsk II agreement in full.

Macron knows that to ensure stability in the region the war in Ukraine must end, and to do that the rights of Russian-Ukrainians must be respected as per the Minsk Agreement. Unfortunately, many in Ukraine and elsewhere have a different agenda and a different solution to ending the war.

My prediction. And I have been saying the same thing for years.

Until the U.S. and Europe put real pressure on Kiev to adopt and implement the Minsk II agreement that they had signed onto in 2015, this war and the tensions that it is causing will continue.

He's met Biden and knows the guy is senile and not capable to lead NATO.
Macron has vaulting ambition in NATO and the EU so this is an opportunity to show French prestige.
Putin knows all of this and keeps using 130,000 troops as a lever to break France and Germany away from its tight embrace of the USA led by a moron and a country hopelessly in debt, inflation, a daunting China challenge and civil unrest.

What would you do if Scholz or Macron?
Make a deal with the European Russia obviously.

Macron is very hard. Just ask any cougar Macron has dated, who is 20 years past the use by date.

The Minsk Agreement succeeded at only one thing; to divide a already divided nation, and Russia knew well in advance of what it was doing.

If Russia annexed Ukraine today or tomorrow or sometime in the future, people like WNU Editor and those who support the Minsk Agreement would happily sign away Ukraine to Russia.

A new accord needs to be met.

The Minsk Agreement (as interpreted by Moscow) isn't about protecting the interests or rights of Ukraine's Russian speaking minority. It's about destroying the Ukrainian national government's ability to govern their country, and allowing Russia to divide and control the different oblasts of Ukraine. It would lead to similar conditions as existing in the old Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth before the Partitions. It is Putin's ambitions in Ukraine, not the supposed plight of any Russian speaking Ukrainians, that is the cause of the crisis. Everything else is only pretext. If Ukraine passed a law saying Russian was the only official language in the country, Putin would find another pretext. That WNU editor does not seem to realize this clashes with his otherwise very trenchant observations on other conflicts.

If Putin would abandon his predatory behavior, you could get an agreement tomorrow on general security in Eastern Europe and the use of the Russian language in Ukraine.

While I have previously recommended the Power Vertical podcast by Brian Whitmore for an alternative viewpoint on Ukraine, for those looking for a more balanced perspective, there's Mark Galleoti's podcast In Moscow's shadows (on Buzzsprout). He knows exactly what kind of person Putin is, but more open in the possibility that some kind of agreement is possible.
