Moscow Times: Russia Backs Ukraine Separatists’ Full Territorial Claims

Russia backs the full territorial claims of separatists in eastern Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin said Tuesday evening.

Speaking at a press conference, Putin said: "We recognized them. And this means that we recognized all their fundamental documents, including the constitution. And the constitution spells out the borders within the Donetsk and Luhansk regions at the time when they were part of Ukraine."

"President Joe Biden’s prediction that Russia will invade Ukraine and his suggestion that the West’s response could be more muted for a “minor” incursion drew swift criticism from Washington to Kyiv, with some accusing him of giving Russia the green light to attack."

It is not correct. He says that he recognises their constitutions, including the part where they claim the full regions. It would be rather strange if he recognised everything but that. He then says that the plan is to acquire the remaining parts of the regions by negotiations in the years to come. I am not holding my breath, and of course words are cheap. However, he is definitely not announcing or endorsing an imminent offensive or anything like that. Rather, it looks to me like he is tempering expectations with regards to further reconquests.

(Or is it a cunning trick of course, but you can say that about absolutely anything.)
