US Approves $100 Million Support Missile Defense Sale To Taiwan

Daily Mail: US approves $100 million support deal with Taiwan for Patriot missiles aimed at boosting the island's missile defense systems as it faces increasing pressure from China 

* The Biden administration has approved a $100 million support contract with Taiwan aimed at boosting the island's missile defense systems 

* The arms deal comes as the small island nation faces increasing pressure from China to accept its sovereignty 

* Beijing has not ruled out the use of force to unify the island with the mainland and has in recent months escalated fighter jet flights over Taiwanese airspace 

* Taiwan has repeatedly complained of missions within its air defense zone by China's air force 

* Officials in Washington believe the invasive air exercises are Beijing's efforts to pressure Taiwan into accepting Chinese sovereignty over the island 

* Last month, China's ambassador to the US said the a military conflict could erupt between should Washington continue to back Taiwan's efforts for independence 

The Biden administration has approved a $100 million support contract with Taiwan amid fears China may try and take the island by force. 

The State Department announced the engineering and maintenance agreement on Monday as China plays host to the 2022 Winter Olympics, an event filled with nationalist fervor that some fear could escalate after the Games into an attempt to take Taiwan by force. 

Beijing regards Taiwan as a renegade province, has not ruled out the use of force to unify the island with the mainland and has in recent months escalated fighter jet flights over Taiwanese airspace.
