Axios: COVID deaths are rising even as Omicron dies down
Change in reported COVID-19 cases per 100k people in the last two weeks.
Omicron is finally on its way out, but it's leaving behind a death toll that is still rising.
By the numbers: New cases are plunging. The U.S. is now averaging just under 425,000 new cases per day, down from over 750,000 per day just two weeks ago.
* And for the first time since the Omicron wave set in, almost the whole country is sharing in that improvement. Average daily cases have fallen over the past two weeks in all but five states.
Where it stands: Maryland and Washington, D.C., have the lowest rates of COVID spread in the country, each with fewer than 45 cases per 100,000 people. New York and New Jersey aren’t far behind.
* Alaska has the country's biggest COVID outbreak, with 310 cases per 100,000 people. Most states are still well above 100 cases per 100,000 people. So there's still a long way to go. But that improvement is happening quickly.

WNU Editor: The death toll numbers from yesterday continue to be jaw-dropping (see below):

I am not surprised that the Biden administration wants to move on .... So long, Omicron: White House eyes next phase of pandemic (Politico). More American citizens have died from Covid under President Biden's watch than under President Trump. And those numbers continue to rise.
Update: Not surprised .... So why did so many American mainstream media outlets IGNORE a reputable university's study that lockdowns didn't work? New York Times, Washington Post, ABC, NBC and CBS all failed to run the story because they 'have their own narrative written' (Daily Mail).

"Lockdowns didn't work." Of course they didn't work. It's kind of like "red-heads tolerate pain better than others, "laughter is good medicine," etc. These are things intuitively known by anyone who pays attention. Yet we still spend enormous resources and sums of money proving the obvious. Furthermore many of us who have studied economics and have worked in small business for decades knew lockdowns would never work, would only make things worse, and repeatedly tried to warn federal, state, and local officials. Fortunately many "red state" leaders came to realize the folly of lockdowns fairly quickly and changed course.
Interestingly if restrictions of which lockdowns were a part really did reduce deaths by 0.2% which seems reasonable, any good analysist would know this is incomplete. We would need to take into account the increases in mental illness and lack of treatment for other ailments that were denied because of these restrictions. Once factored in, it is obvious to those who are paying attention that mortality was actually increased overall as a result of the restrictions. At some point very expensive and resource sucking studies will confirm the obvious.
The good doctor at Johns Hopkins "tore into the outlets." At the beginning of the pandemic organizations like Johns Hopkins were elevated to cult like status that we couldn't dare question. If he and his organization keep this up, they may be finding out what happens when the leadership class turns against them!! They do seem to be able to turn on a dime!!
