Coca-Cola, Pepsi, McDonald’s And Starbucks Suspend Operations In Russia

 

CNBC: Iconic U.S. brands Coca-Cola, Pepsi, McDonald’s and Starbucks suspend business in Russia 

* PepsiCo, Coca-Cola, McDonald’s and Starbucks each said Tuesday they are suspending business in Russia after that country’s invasion of Ukraine. 

* It’s a symbolic move by the iconic U.S. brands, some of which have been operating in the country since it was part of the Soviet Union. 

* In recent days, all four companies have drawn criticism for continuing to operate in Russia while other U.S. companies announced business suspensions. 

PepsiCo, Coca-Cola, McDonald’s and Starbucks each said Tuesday they are suspending business in Russia after that country’s invasion of Ukraine, a symbolic move by four iconic U.S. brands. 

Pepsi has sold it products in Russia for more than six decades, even when the company had to trade its soda concentrate for Stolichnaya vodka and warships. 

McDonald’s opened its first location beyond the Iron Curtain in Moscow, just months before the Soviet Union collapsed. 

In recent days, Pepsi, Coke, McDonald’s and Starbucks have drawn criticism for continuing to operate in Russia while other U.S. companies announced suspensions and paused sales.

I am not sure how wise these actions are. The war could be over in a week or two with an negotiated settlement. Some companies will not get back their market share, if they suspend operations. Some companies will have zero market share in Russia, I suspect that Mastercard to be one of those.

To lose multinationals is to lose influence. Consider South Africa. Was it the Sullivan Principles, boycott, or a mix that broke up apartheid?

Win, lose, or draw Putin is gone in 5 or 10 years. He has 5 good years and maybe 5 more good years after that.

Companies and their employees that have good business practices can be god ambassadors. Not having operations in a country means that are that many fewer chances to make good continual impressions.
