German Chancellor Rejects Putin’s Rubles-For-Gas Demand But Admits Russian energy ban would mean European recession

Politico: Germany’s Scholz rejects Putin’s rubles-for-gas demand

Putin’s move is viewed as an attempt to bolster his flagging currency and evade Western sanctions.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Thursday dismissed Russia's demand that the EU and U.S. pay for Russian gas in rubles, arguing that most existing gas purchase agreements require payment in euros or U.S. dollars.

Russian President Vladimir Putin took the step on Wednesday, challenging Western efforts to punish Moscow for its Ukraine invasion by announcing that so-called "unfriendly" countries — a list including EU countries and the United States — will have to buy Russian gas imports in rubles.

The move was seen as an attempt to prop up Russia's tumbling currency and potentially evade Western penalties.

Yet speaking at a press conference following a summit of the G7 advanced economies in Brussels, Scholz rebuffed Putin's request.

Enough loss of income and Russia could face recession along with Germany.

Germany loses the gas and Russia loses some moolah.

Right now if Russia is suppling Indian and China more, it means India and China are taking less form other sources. Those other sources can supply Germany the cost will be higher as the transport cost is higher.

On some ways it helps Germany. It transforms or defeats the Greens. They have to show rates of return on in energy production. It makes for a more politically stable Germany.

Sanctions are not working against Putin but work well against European's. It would be hilarious if it was not that serious.

I respectfully disagree Jac. Putin was able to build up his military with oil; profits. He has been discounting oil sold to China and India. That has to hurt further expansion or replacement of losses. I do not have all the facts and figures on income, so I could be wrong.

You have a point. I am wrong on it.

At 2-3x the price of course! Net result: still mass poverty.

If the choice is between capitulation with slavery and mass poverty or fighting the Russians and mass poverty, I will pick the latter.

Russia already has a good deal of mass poverty. They have 5 million people in poverty or is that homeless. That is out of a population of 150 million. Their problems are getting worse also.

That isn't the choice retard. It's a choice between mass poverty and not filling Ukraine with NATO bases. You picked mass poverty because the other is apparently so important to you.
