CNBC: Russia-Ukraine talks fail with no progress on cease-fire, safe passage for civilians

* Russia and Ukraine’s foreign ministers met for talks in Turkey on Thursday.

* The discussions, which lasted less than two hours, failed to achieve a cease-fire or an agreement over safe passage for civilians fleeing the besieged port city of Mariupol.

* Russia invaded its neighbor Ukraine two weeks ago and fighting continues to rage across the country.

Talks between Russia and Ukraine’s foreign ministers in Turkey on Thursday appear to have ended in failure, with no progress made on establishing a cease-fire or safe passage for civilians trying to flee the besieged city of Mariupol.

The discussions, between Russia’s foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, and his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba, lasted just 1½ hours. When he emerged, Kuleba told a news conference that the talks had been “both easy and difficult.”

Russians negotiate to buy time and limit intervention by other actors. They have never negotiated a peace deal or truce wherein they didn’t get everything they wanted. Untrustworthy doesn’t even come close.

Of course Macron would do it. It gives him stature. The gelding needs it. What have been the downside politically for 'leaders' who have mediated, but no peace resulted?

BJ would mediate if his GF pillow talked him into it.

Scholzimatic does not come anywhere close to mediation unless an acceptable solution was to be had.

The merest whiff of jet lag might do Biden in.

Kamala would cackle nervously.

Trump as president could git-r-done assuming official Washington would do what it did to him in Syria.
