Russian President Defends His Actions To Start A War With Ukraine While Condeming Those Who Oppose Him

US News and World Report: Putin Defends Brutal Campaign in Ukraine as Global Condemnation Grows

The Russian leader attempted to justify his decision to begin a brutal and bloody assault on Ukraine while also expressing some recognition of the threats to his own grip on power.

President Vladimir Putin put forward a comprehensive, if disjointed, defense of Russia’s bloody assault on Ukraine three weeks after it began in an apparent recognition of growing international outrage at the brutality of the campaign.

WNU Editor: There are many who oppose this war, this blogger included, but Putin's ire is particularly directed at the oligarchs who enjoy a privileged life in the West. This analysis from former KGB agent Jack Barsky on the part of Putin's address targeting the country's oligarchs is spot on (see below).

Update: More analysis on Putin's remarks that target some of the country's oligarchs (see below).

Update #2: A lot of the oligarchs have already fled .... Russian Oligarchs Fleeing To Israel In Rented Private Jets To Escape Sanctions: Report (IBtimes), including a few today .... Exodus of Private Jets Out of Russia As Putin Calls for 'Self-Purification' (Newsweek).

Putin has a point. Many if not all of the oligarchs obtained their billions through theft, fraud and murder. The government and the oligarchs used each other. Putin could have gone after them in the 1990s. He didn't. So he considers them ungrateful.

On the other hand Putin did not run his plans past them, so they do not fell obliged to help him and they are also right.

PICTURED: American lecturer, 67, is shot dead by Russian snipers as he waited in bread line in Chernihiv: Family reveals he stayed in Ukraine to care for sick partner

"Jimmy Hill, 67, was shot dead in Chernihiv on Wednesday while lining up to buy bread from a grocery store "

Snipers are more elite than conscripts. You can't explain that they were conscripts, green or panicked.

"this blogger included" - I don't think there's any doubt you're against the war. I think there's certainly a view that you are in favor of a pro-Russian outcome that will result in the loss of more territory for Ukraine.

Your blog and the history of your opinions are available here for viewing, from your projected view that Crimea annexation had the support of the people in it to the two-breakaway provinces due to what you constantly refer to as Ukrainian-Russian people speaking.

You may not support the war, sir, but you certainly support Russia, and have always done so in a soft-ball manner.

What is different between Trinistria and Moldava versus Donbas and Ukraine?

The former happened right out of the chute with Moscow's blessing.

If Russia and Ukraine were both part of the EU, borders would not matter.

Plus the Russian speaking Ukrainians could have their "rights" to speak Russian, while on the commode or in court.

I wonder why they chose to flee to Israel?

Those oligarchs fleeing to Israel is bad news for the US. It will ramp up anti-semitism and conspiracy theories.
