President Joe Biden's administration on Tuesday will add a new designation to State Department warnings for China, Russia, Iran and other countries to warn of the risk of unlawful detention of Americans.
It's part of a new executive order the president signed aimed at helping Americans detained abroad that will support the families of the detainees and impose costs on the culprits - including possible financial sanctions and visa bans.
Biden has faced growing pressure from families of hostages and detainees, particularly on the case of WNBA star Brittney Griner and former Marine Paul Whelan, both of whom are being held in Russia.
