The consumer price index, a broad measure of goods and services in the nation, soared above the 8.8 percent Dow Jones estimate.
It's the biggest 12-month increase in nearly four decades, and up from an 8.6 percent jump in May.
On a monthly basis, prices rose 1.3 percent from May to June, another substantial increase, after prices had jumped 1 percent from April to May.
