Ukraine Government Tells War Refugees Not To Return This Winter

Kyiv city centre was without electricity after power stations were hit by Russian missile attacks

BBC: Ukraine war refugees asked not to return this winter

Ukrainian refugees should not return until spring to help ease pressure on the energy system after a wave of Russian attacks, the government said.

"The networks will not cope," said Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk.

"You see what Russia is doing." "We need to survive the winter," she added.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russian air strikes had destroyed more than a third of the country's energy sector.

Ms Vereshchuk said that although she would like Ukrainians to return in the spring, it was important to refrain from returning for now because "the situation will only get worse".

"If it is possible, stay abroad for the time being," she added.

WNU Editor: One of my cousins returned to Kyiv last month, and she is now preparing to leave.

This is what she told me two days ago.

Electricity comes and go. There is no economy, with the unemployment rate closer to 70% and not the 6% or 7% that the government claims. Russian missile and drone strikes are happening everyday. Hospitals are full with wounded soldiers. Food and essentials are in short supply and rationed. Everyone knows winter is going to be horrendous, and it will impact senior citizens the most who have nowhere to go.

Not what the Polish wanted to hear. The level of civil unrest regarding the refugees has risen substantially alongside inflation and the cost of feeding and housing them. Expect a lot more requests for US money to help local politicians quell these demonstrations.

If reports are to be believed, 6 million Ukrainian refugees have escaped to Poland.

Seems like quite a lot. Quite a strain.
