Patriarch Kirill, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, warned the public that their country's existence is under threat.
Kirill made the statement after the consecration of the temple of the National Guard in Balashikha, Moscow, on Sunday. The priest called for intensified prayers "for the authorities and the Armed Forces," claiming growing threats against Russia.
He added that the army should not be "mechanical".
"We must not ignore these petitions, especially when people face dangers -- dangers that challenge the very existence of our country," the patriarch said, per Russian news agency Interfax.

WNU editor: Religion plays a very important role for a majority of Russians. In particular with the generation that was born after the fall of the Soviet Union. My cousins in Moscow were never religious, but since the start of the war they are going to church every Sunday. They tell me the pews are packed.
That is why Moscow Patriarch Kirill's declaration that the very existence of Russia is now under threat is very concerning. A lot of people get their spiritual guidance from him. Including a lot of people in the Kremlin.
So why the concern over this remark on Russia's existence by a Russian spiritual leader?
Russian nuclear doctrine is very straightforward. Nuclear weapons can only be used if the existence of Russia is under threat, and Moscow Patriarch Kirill just said the country's existence is under threat.
Moscow Patriarch Kirill is also Putin's personal priest and ally, and my gut tells me that he is probably one of the few people who has Putin's ear. So yes .... we better listen to what Patriarch Kirill is saying.
On a side note. Former Russian President Medvedev is now in the habit of using religion to defend Russia's war in Ukraine .... Russia Fighting 'Sacred' Battle Against Satan, Medvedev Says (RFE).
One more side note. Canada has banned Moscow Patriarch Kirill from entering Canada. This is the first time that I know of a major spiritual leader being banned from this country.
On a personal note. I am Russian Orthodox. When I was young I was never religious. But that changed when I met Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn at Montreal's main Orthodox church in the east end when I was working for the UN (Solzhenitsyn was living in Vermont at the time, and he would regularly cross the border to go to our church and meet our arch-bishop). Let us just say that meeting him was always a profound experience. And while I was not a fan of his brand of hard-core Russian nationalism , when it came to religion he was a spiritual revelation to me.

It is argued that religion 'should' stay out of politics. perhaps. But morals inform policies or should. Morals such as thou shall not steal are beneficial for good governance. Therein lies the rub. Lots of politicians are corrupt. They steal or act in other ways such as there is a collision with religion.
Religious authorities can keep it it very non-specific or very generic. But at some point more than a few politicians will be caught with their hand in the till and then with or without being told the faithful will often turn on those politicians. Politicians hate that. So they try to stamp out religion or suborn it.
Hitler had his portrait in every church. Xi is doing the same thing. Great minds think alike. The Kremlin has suborned the Eastern Orthodox church and the church went along with it. Partly it was out of fear of a return to the Soviet days and persecution.
the orthodox church was one way of bringing Russia and Ukraine together and now the Russian part of the church has fucked that all to hell!

He is however using this as an excuse to wage war against religion.

Is the above remark fair? I think not. The commenter might believe his own stuff, but if you dig down it is a lie.
I do not think 3:41 knows how much pressure via intimidation or outright violence and executions cause church leaders to knuckle under.
I am willing to bet that 3:41 believes that Pope Benedict the XVIth should never have been elected Pope because he was a NAZI. Never mind he was drafted in the last 3 or was it 6 months of the war. Benedict was drafted into the German army and so ipso facto he is a NAZI. Right.
Benedict was a young kid had a cousin taken away by the NAZIs. The cousin was euthanized. a lot of violence happened before 1939 that cowed people. The was also a lot of street fighting in the 20s. A lot of blood was spilled.
If all it took was a dictator to point at a religious leader and that leader would support the dictator, then Romero would be alive.
When you look at the religious leaders look equally as hard as the heads of industry, unions and other organizations.
I am chagrinned that people barely know any facts about WW2. What chance do they have to know what happened in the runup.
Lets concentrate on the word dictators. Let's not look America or China or other countries. In China if you go to a Temple you will see 2 or 3 plain clothes government minders. They are not there to prevent crime such as robbery or murder. The Us and Canada are not much better than China. But Dictators okay. Just have to say dictators and your argument is won.
